  • Trolley Jack for 120 Series

    Hi everyone

Looking to get a trolley jack to use under the Prado. Would you consider a 1350kg jack sufficient to do most jobs? Keeping in mind I can only jack up half the weight of the vehicle (which should be alot less than 2700kg even when fully loaded).

    Thanks

I'd be going for a 2000kg one with min 450mm lift height.

That's what I have - a little more expensive than your run of the mill home one you see in Autobarn etc, but much more useful.

Also get some axle stands if you're going to work under the car of course.
    Cheers, Wayne

      Thanks for that.

I already have heavy duty axle stands and would never consider going under the car without them.

I would normally go for the 2000kg option but the reason I was considering the 1350kg jacks is that I can get a couple for next to nothing and just wanted to make sure that they won't crap themselves. I know 2000kg would be better but do you think the 1350kg would be adequate?

Thew other issue with the 1350kg, is it has a reduce lift height, from memory about 100mm less than 2000kg.

The 1400kg on SCA website only lifts to a height of 330mm, thats only 1foot, wouldn't think that would be enough for a prado.

go about 2000kg minimum. costs more but anything less and the height won't be enough. also it will be bigger therefore greater leverage = easier to lift. I bought a 2100kg from Repco recently for $80 and is adequate for the odd occasions I use it.

            Thanks everyone.

I think I'll just save the pennies and get a 2000kg jack. The one I was looking at only had a lift of 330mm. Hardly enough for a Prado.

            Cheers

              PPs
This is probably an uncalled for Safety Warning as it is logical.
When using a Trolley Jack ALWAYS use a smooth surface (board or smooth concrete), Not Bitumen, Exposed Aggregate or Gravel.
Demonstration--Using a 12" or 300mm ruler hold it on the desk in a Horizontal position lift one end and you will see that the "lifting point" will move through 12' or 300mm to get to Vertical, assuming that the "lifting point" will meet the 'jacking point' at about halfway, this means that the body of the TJ will need to move about 8" or 200mm under load and if the TJ is stuck in Gravel or suchlike all that will happen is that the "lifting point" will slip from under the load.
Basically the Trolley Jack needs to "Trolley" under a load.

              Well it is getting late!!!!!

My old and to date faithful 2.5t trolley jack collapsed yesterday just after I removed the axle stands. The Prado fell onto the jack saving the disc from hitting the floor. The jack is twisted as a result. It appears on inspection that the ‘P’ clip holding the metal bar through the frame has sheared and the bar popped out. I’m upgrading as I was lucky!
