has anyone used biodiesel? I'm interested in thoughts, opinions, experiences etc. Can buy biodiesel in Northern Syd 13c cheaper than pure fossil diesel.

In WA we get Gull B20, I've been using it for a year or so, about 40,000k's. It's cheaper than ordinary diesel, 20% carbon neutral, and from instinct (no facts) it feels as though the Prado runs a bit better.

Guys in my line of work we fix a lot of truck engines (yellow ones), seen way too many breakdowns and big bills caused by Bio diesel. Do a little homework first and check what % is bio and where they source it. It would seem there is no regulation in the bio manufacturing industry, you could get anything from one tank to the next.
Ask the question - is 13c p/l worth 4 k for a fuel pump and injectors if you get some dud fuel. The supplier wont help with the costs.

I did a little research before I used it for the first time.
Found a NSW based website forum about biodiesel. ( i have posted a link to this site some where else in here) they even went as far as making there own, 100% Bio. One post I read then was apparently from some big wig from Gull (wa based fuel company). He mentioned the percent and other technical type stuff. 20% Bio the rest dino.
The main thing that I picked up at their forum was that when in the higher % (near 100%)of bio the higher the risk of rubber components breaking down.
As in rubber fuel lines, gaskets and "o"rings.
That was due to the lack of natural lubricant/ protectants that are in dino diesel.
So my guess would be with 80% dino you would still get protectants but still get a saving?

peterg4508. What was the main cause of component failures in the yellow trucks? If there was 1 main cause that is.

          Jeff.

            Just another thing.

If the issue is a lubricant/ protectant one, the white coated nutty professors would find an additive to help with that.

As Hamster said on Top Gear last night, "Guys with lots of pens in their top pocket". As a side note when the tax on diesel was raised we ran our locomotives on heating oil for a year or so, which did not attract the same taxes. The same issue arose with maintenance costs, black smoke, injectors and fuel filters. As it's only B20 I'll stick with it for now, but will bear in mind what Peterg says.

From what we can tell its just to much variation with the lubricity of the fuel and how clean it is not, moisture could also be a part, injectors (cam actuated unit injectors)either seize or just stop working. I have seen similar probs with big generators running on filtered curde oil.
