  • Buzzing Noise (Electrical) from behind dashboard/instrument cluster

    Hi
Our 2005 VX Petrol Prado has a buzzing noise from behind the dash (top left behind instrument cluster) immediately after starting for about 15 seconds.
Then stops and only periodically (after reasonable run time) does it cycle again for about 15 seconds.

Anybody know what might be causing this? Toyota service at 2 dealers haven't come across it before.

    Thanks

Hi GlennBBB, I too have weird buzzing noise coming from the dash on startup. 2007 Petrol Grande. Comes and goes but seems to be related to aircon. My mechanic had no idea so I left it, but it does seem to be getting worse. Your post is the closest I have found to similar/same issue, did you ever resolve yours ? Cheers

Do you have your fan on while you are hearing this sound. Try the fan at high speed to note any difference.
strange that it cycles. Could have had something fall down the windscreen demister vent that is vibrating.
could be the a/c gas system having a grumble.
you are also likely to have a cabin "pollen filter" located behind the glovebox.
This sits above the blower fan, its supposed to reduce the dust, leaves, pollen etc. entering the cabin from the fresh air intake grill.
I've cleaned gum leaves out that have been vibrating on top of the filter.
Depending on condition they can be dusted down or even washed. They are also available as replacement parts genuine and aftermarket.

        Thanks Troy,
It happens when fan is off. Changing fan speed makes no difference. I cleaned out the filter problem persisted.

A few seconds after starting the engine the buzzing will start and last for ~10 secs. It can happen at random times but I have noticed it's worse if the A/C mode is windscreen or body and if I switch to feet it stops.

It will also start buzzing about 1 minute after switching everything off and is quite loud !

Apart from the odd buzzing the A/C is working nicely.
It does sound like a small compressor kicking in when pressure is low. I'll get it regassed and see if that makes a difference ...hopefully it won't point to major AC problem

        Cheers
        Ged

There is a solenoid valve that closes about 10 secs or so after shutting down the car. Think its fresh air inlet or something. Could be a dud solenoid. coil

Some time ago there was a similar problem posted.
It mentioned some lever or something similar that pivoted and may vibrate. It was located if I remember in the area above the drivers left foot. I have tried a search but cannot find anything maybe someone else can find it. I hope this doesn’t muddy the waters but it may help. Good luck.

Got this fixed today. Turns out it is the AC motor that switches the mode from blowing at the feet, face or both. Solution is to either replace the motor or lock to one mode ( straight up) and disable the motor. Takes 10 minutes under the steering wheel. I never really
need to switch the modes anyways from straight air.

I think there are 4 such motors/actuators for the AC doing separate functions.

Hi there, interesting reading there. I too have this noisey vibrating sound come from my dash at all times. Everything in the dash is working fine. The noise happens at all times, regardless of what is on or off. It does happen a lot just after startup, everyone I’ve asked up here has never heard of it before... Getting very frustrating...

Is this a big or expensive job??

I have the same thing but it only happens at startup for about 10 seconds. Would this throw a code for a 120? Is the official part name AC motor?

I too have had a loud/buzzing sound coming from dash, when air con is on, and possibly from drivers footwell area. Seems to stop when I turn vents from face to foot mode/vents…

Any more info on the possible required part name?

                        thanks

Can try buying an SY4045 relay from Jaycar ($10) & replace existing with it. Should fix the problem.
