  • Wheel bearings for long distance/ remote travel ?

Hi guys, so I am in the process of prepping my 04 120 (4.0L) for a trip around Aus in august, and want some advice on wheel bearings.
    Do they commonly fail?

I don't have any experience with these bearings, but from what I've heard is they cant be replaced on the side of the road, need to be machine pressed.

I want to be prepared for the worst case situation if one fails, what do you guys recommend? all I can think is carry around spare hub and bearing assemblies.
But would I need 4 different ones for each wheel? or are the front wheels and rear wheel setups the same so I would only need to carry 2?

appreciate any advice, I'm not too keen on buying $800 in spare hubs for the unlikely event one fails

    thanks

Rears rarely fail, fronts usually last up to 250k, change them before you go on a big trip. Yours being an '04 I would assume has a few k's on it?

Mine are getting noisy @ 210K. For those who have been down this path, did you use genuine or after market & how much wallet pain did you encounter.

Genuine ex Amayama Japan, around $800 for hubs, bearings, studs, bolts and seals. That was last year so prices might have changed since then. Assembled and pressed together beforehand so change over is easy. They can be a b!tch to press the bearings off the old hubs, though not impossible. Anthony Fourby in Melb sells assembled units with genuine bearings, not sure how much he charges but it's way less than Toyo Aus.

I spoke to Anthony yesterday about this, looks like I'm getting them from him...
