  • Timing Belt or Chain Clarification

    Hey guys,

    I have a 120 2005 Prado GXL GRJ120R Engine No 1GR5170017

I have been doing some searching online to clarify if my vehicle has a timing belt or a timing chain.

Does anyone have a definitive answer?

Also how often would a timing belt need to be changed and same for a timing chain?

    Thanks a lot.

I've got the exact same car; model and year. It's got a timing chain. The timing chain lasts a lot longer, if not indefinitely if cared for (regular oil changes etc.), and only needs to be replaced when an issue arises, e.g. loud rattling coming from the engine.

The 1GRFE V6 has a timing chain and they do wear out especially if the oil is not changed regularly or incorrect oil is used. Mine had no symptoms except the check engine light being on. You can visually check the amount of movement on the chain adjuster by removing the inspection plate on the drivers side of timing cover. Not a quick or easy job to do, but will need to be done if the timing chain is worn to the pint of throwing a code. (or making a noise)
