  • Roof Leak (Not the roof racks or sun roof)

Hi all, been following the site for a while, with tons of useful info. Got my first question now that I'm hoping someone can help with.

I fitted some roof racks (secondhand ARB) about 8 months ago (only owned the car for around the same time) so first rainy season with this car in South Australia and i noticed the passenger side seatbelt getting wet whenever it rains. After searching here i found the info saying, seal up the bolts. (i did do it when i installed the roof racks to start with but though maybe i wasn't liberal enough with silicone in the bolt holes.) So i pulled the roof racks off again, bought some 3mm closed cell neoprene from Clarks Rubber to place under the rack, and put plenty of silicone on the bolts and reinstalled it all. STILL LEAKING......

So not convinced the bolts could still be leaking i pulled off the center pillar trim and put a hosepipe on the roof to see what's happening. It looks like water is coming from between the rook skins (if that makes sense) You can see on the pictures where there are slight rust marks showing where the water is running down from.

Anyone else have something similar or know what or where the cause might be? Im hoping its a blocked drain channel or something easier than pulling off the roof racks again to inspect the channels.

    Thanks in advance.
In case it matters... Prado 120 series 2005 model (no sunroof)

Possibly roof skin hasn't been glued properly. Pull rack off, pull all strips off and thoroughly clean it and seal with Dripcheck or the likes.

Suggestion, forget about Silicon for this application
            Sikaflex, stronger and more flexible.
I tried Silicon as it is perfect for other applications like this, however it leaked again a little while later
Sikaflex and have not had a problem in years, driven across some horrible roads and desert with roof cage full and not one issue
Bitumen is boring, at least it can get you to the next off road adventure
