  • Fault code P0046 turbo control solenoid A circuit

New owner and 2nd post. Diesel 120 (2009)
Car has had an intermittent (retarded performance) a few times over the past 4 weeks. Car runs but lacks any acceleration.Next time I am driving it it would be fine and thought it must be some debri in the fuel line. Happened again yesterday and also threw up the engine check light on the dash. Turned off car and back on and whilst fault light remained on, it ran normally.
Ran the scanner and it was a P0046/$07E8 Turbo boost solenoid A circuit fault.
Cleared the fault and car has run without issue but there is obviously some underlying problem that is causing this . As best as I can recall the car starts in that mode rather than running fine and then developing the problem. When the problem occurs its from starting off . Any suggestions or anyone come across this previously

Had the same problem P0046 - at about the same time. Also 1KD. But was worse for me. Had to limp home under 1400 revs. Not much fun. Found a video on youtube explaining that if you can get to the turbo, soak the actuator arm from the stepping motor in WD40, leave it to soak, then clear the fault code, it might just get you going again. I did, and it worked for me. Limp mode went away and I got the whole rev range back. But power was lacking and the turbo now whistles - sounds like a siren is approaching.

Turns out turbo needs replacing but issue may have been caused by carbon buildup in the intake. Apparently the black muck can come loose, make its way through the engine, and damage or gum up the turbo vanes on the exhaust side. So I also need to decarbon the intake. And I think while all the bits are off I might do the injectors as well.

How did you go with yours?

Yes I cleared the code and have done close to 3,500 km since and it has not happened again.
When I had the issue it wasnt long after I had bought the car and and they had cleared the egr with some stuff ( unknown) which may have found its way through as you have experienced.
I dont have any .turbo issue so far touch wood. Sorry to hear that you are looking at a turbo replacement.
If you dont mind let me know what thats worth as my luck may run out before to long.

New turbos run north of $3000. Reconditioned used genuine around $2000. I bought a used one off ebay for $200 (busted) and had a turbo specialist rebuild it with a high flow core (+15%). Total cost under $1000. Once I get them swapped over I might get the original one rebuilt to keep it as a spare. Was quoted about $500 to fit. But if they are fitting a new one they will probably need to drop the oil and coolant for new fresh stuff - to satisfy the warranty conditions of the turbo manufacturer. Add another few hundred for that. Supposed to use a brand new oil line as well ($150) and a gasket kit.

But turbo is the least of my worries at the moment. Pulled the car apart to find the intake well clogged up with sludge. Injectors were on the way out with two seats already leaking. I was lucky though - the blow by had not yet destroyed the o-rings and contaminated the oil. Oil pickup was clean last time I checked.
