Hi guys,
Appreciate all I have learned searching this forum but haven’t found this exact situation.
When towing a caravan with our 2007 diesel 120s, the fuel filter light comes on after about 60kms of continuous driving. It almost always resets ok and then comes on again after another 60kms. Initially we were changing the filter each time but the last few days we have just changed the filter if it doesn’t immediately reset, as we would otherwise change five filters a day. We’ve done four this fortnight. Generally the light doesn’t come on when we’re not towing but two weeks ago in the Bungle Bungles the car stalled after doing 50km of rough dirt. Changed filter and all seemed ok.
We have installed a secondary fuel filter which shows no evidence of water or dirt but we drain it regularly anyway. We have also treated the car with F10. The alarm has never sounded and the light has never flashed.
In a perfect world we would have dumped the fuel and flushed the tank straight away. However, we have been unable to find a mechanic that can fit us in for weeks as we have been in remote locations.
Toyota in Kununurra did run diagnostics and said the EGR filter was the problem. They changed it but it doesn’t seem to have helped. They did say the fuel system was fine.
MAF has recently been cleaned. Filter between tanks has been changed.
I acknowledge we may have done significant damage. RACQ wouldn’t tow us home as the car was deemed driveable so we have done the best we can.
I just want to check if you think the best option here is to dump and flush ASAP this week when we get to an available mechanic. Is there anything else we should try first? Is it possible that the fuel filter sensor is playing up or definitely dirty fuel? We just don’t want to outlay $$$$ and then discover it was something else. (Been there, done that!)
Thanks very much for your help.
