  • Changing the A/C evaporator core

My organization has a 2009 Prado 120 that already has a leak in the A/C evaporator core. I have a new core on order, but it looks like no simple task to get the old core out. The heater core and the evaporator core are contained in a plastic shroud that diverts the air flow to the floor, panel, or defrost. I was hoping to be able to split this shroud to remove the evaporator without disassembling the whole dash, but I'm not sure this will be possible. I don't need step by step instructions, but if anybody can give me any pointers, I could use them.

Is there a Toyota Dealership in Haiti you can go to for a warranty claim?

This vehicle was purchased just over a year ago so it might still be covered. Our confidence in the dealer's ability to get the vehicle put back together correctly is very low, so the decision was made not to fight them to fix the problem. We will get it done, but I thought maybe someone who has done it before might have some pearls of wisdom to share.

Thanks Darren. "Full dash out" is a very useful bit of information. Should keep me from wasting time second guessing.

When the part comes in we'll see how my level of patience is... might be offering you a Caribbean vacation.

Just got the dash out now guys and the plastic AC unit is still difficult to remove. Its doing my head in. There's a support beam that runs across the dash with metal brackets going down to hold the AC assembly in place. The mounting brackets suggest the AC unit is to be lowered for removal but wont budge or wiggle. "Full Dash" out Isn't too bad. I'll keep you guys posted as I progress after lunch.

Hi folks, keeping this thread alive by confirming what the OP said (some models i.e. with auto aircon climate control) will have an enclosed plastic shroud/box that will make removing the evaporator via the "slide out" method used in other ac models, not possible.

I removed the glove box side, with blower, wires, cables and vents 1st, followed by the drivers side steering wheel panels etc. then next took out the radio, ac, and facia panels out followed by the steering wheel and then the complete dash.

Take your time, you dont want to be breaking anything and also be prepared to do a bit of yoga to get your phillips head screwdriver into some tight spots.
