  • What is the best camping mattress?

    Hi All,

Going on a two week trip down through Cape le grand etc in WA and want the most comfortable double mattress to put in the tent. Any recomendations or ones to avoid?

    Cheers
    Matt.

Hi Matt. Try a high density foam from someone like clark rubber and have it cut to a size that will fit in the car or rack. I always took a large bunch of keys to put under the foam when trying out the foam, they have the same effect as a rock. blow up's are to much of a hassle.enjoy your trip
    Cheers. bribiejohn.

Re: What is the best camping mattress?

We use the Exped self inflating matresses. We have the deluxe 7 and deluxe 9. I think the deluxe 7s are spot on as they are more compact than then 9. This is not a double but work very well. Leave them to inflat for about five minutes then it only requires a few (maybe 5-10) breaths to inflate fully. They are thermally insulated and resonably durable. We did have one puncture in the Simpson as a stick peneratrated the tent and matress but was able to patch it easily and it has never leaked since.

Hi Fellas. Just brought a Coleman "Quilted Air Double High Queen" Bloody awesome. Easy to get out of in the morning as is height of 2 standard air beds - 18". You dont get that lilo bumpy feeling as these have a heavy suede quilt layer on top. Cheers, Derb.

Whats the best camping mattress? we always take our queen size inner spring mattress in our camper trailer, cant tell the difference to being at home

It just doesn't get any better than that.

I'll second that for an inner spring mattress in a CT - first class sleeping.

We have found the best compromise for speed of setting up and minimal storage space is to take a relatively thin self inflating double mattress and add an eggshell layer on top from Clark Rubber. Both pack down to nothing and are very quick and comfy. (... And yes my mrs is fussy!)

ive always found that about 10 beers and half a bottle of spirits of any kind provides a very comfortable sleeping platform where ever you happen to find it . if your going to buy something that you have to inflate , do yourself a favour and get 2 singles and avoid bouncing each other out of bed all night .

A little off topic, but.... Inner spring mattresses in campers, now I am taking Jayco, Goldstream poptops etc.. Is there a max height the mattress can be and still lock down the to when moving on? The Eagle we borrowed for Easter, we were told not to leave anything on the beds when folding down, as the lid would not close. Bt I've seen photos of eggshells on top etc...

As for camp mattresses, the 70mm foam mattress in my OZTrail swag is awesome, never had issues with rocks etc..and also no issue with cold, but swags are like that....

Funny, Kav, never thought of single for air mattresses, great idea as the bouncing was part of the issue we had when tent camping..

Given you're in a tent, Id go with some self inflating mats. I have had genuine 'thermarest' ones and cheaper Denali brand ones. Just two singles next to each other, and have found this to be a good blend of comfort and 'packability'

                            something like this,

I really like the Thermarests too. It's amazing how just a few cm's of padding can keep you comfortable and raised off the hard floor. Not even lying on my side causes a hip or elbow to touch down. Mine are about 14 years old and are still like new.
