  • 120 Replacement Speakers

I've read a few threads on replacing the 120 speakers, fronts are 6x9, rears are 6.5 inch. As I now plan to keep the old girl I thought a speaker refresh is in order. Not fussed about keeping the factory tweeter and don't want to fit an amp so I was thinking about the following. Any thoughts from the more wiser...

I can't find the specifications online with the OEM Headunit - but those look OK.

Impedance is the thing to be careful of, too low (eg 4 ohms) and you risk blowing the speakers, too high might overload the headunit. Typically though 4 ohms is what you will see in an automotive environment. My personal opinion is to run higher wattage than the amp can deliver - if the amp is rated at, say 60 Watts/Channel then 80Watt speakers are the go. But that is just me.

The Prado has speakers? Just done 9000km without playing a single song or listening to the radio.

you will have to make up some form of ply or mdf spacer to mount the speakers to.

for some reason, factory mounts are never conventional. the size is generally what fits the cavity, but getting the new speaker to fit is a different story.

the fronts are not too bad, they are the size of a 6x9, but the 4 mounting holes are off set and the new 6x9 won't be such a straigh forward fit.
the rear's are 6.5". the factory mount has a 3 bolt mount. the 3 mounts don't have an equal PCD either. this was a PITA to get a speaker in there central.

i ended up using some 3mm alloy sheet, marked out the mounting hole positions, and mounted them in the doors as an adaptor.
i used the alloy as opposed to timber for water proofing. the doors will fill with water through deep water crossings, and water will leak through the window seal when it rains or when you wash the car.

i ran a small bead of silicone between the alloy and the door to isolate any vibrations, and then a bit of platic over the back of the speakers. i also went with a poly cone type speaker as it is more resistant to moisture/water.

or check page 2 of my build up.

Then I'd have to put with her music: Abba, Bee Gees, etc.

This is an old thread but I found it and others might too.

Don't bother gutting the existing speaker, you won't be able to mount the new speaker on there in a proper secure way as there is no mating surface at the top to speak of that matches the 6x9 holes.

Just buy the Stinger kit - BNSPTO691. ( front )
You can either use it as a 6.5" spacer or follow the cutout guide and turn it into a 6x9 spacer.
I foam lined the spacer for a nice fit.

This fitted perfectly in my 2005 v6 Grande and the Infinity Kappa 90csx 6x9 speaker mounted perfectly.

There could be others that fit as well.

Ill add 2c to help others. just installed a system into my 120

Fitted Alpine deck and add the aeropro fm signal booster, it helps boost reception as 120's are notorious for crap reception
Front speakers, 6*9, use the aerepro fitting spacer to aid fitting....used some jbls 75w rms
Front door tweeters alpine 100w rms, required some rework.......the original tweeters are about 20mm diameter or smaller
Rear speakers, 6 1/2 inch 100w alpines, aerepro fitting spacer to aid fitting.....
1 old school Alpine mrv 4 channel to run front/rear end

400w rms mono block amp...under passenger seat
300-600w sub between car and engel velcroid down, (cant go anywhere) in case of accident, and can still use the back for fishing, etc

Alpine mrv bolted to back of drawer system behind engel, so its not in the way, was tuned by a car stereo installer, can crank it right up and wont blow anything up, worth the money
System rocks, hope that gives others ideas
