I dislike nanny state laws as much as anyone, but after years in road crash rescue cutting people or what's left of them from MVA's the cop was pretty justified.
Quick story, i went to a MVA involving a stolen VX Commodore doing an estimated 170km/h that hit a Camry head on doing 110km/h on the Pacific hwy NSW. The force of the impact sheered the boot open and ejected a steel toolbox full of tools out of the Camry and 75 meters down the roadway from the crash site.
Just that toolbox could of turned it from a double to a triple fatal. The guy in Adelaide's solar panel held on with 50 cents worth or silicone is just the right height to come off and guillotine the occupants in either vehicle. We really need to be mindful of what we attach to our vehicles and how our gear is attached.
The gas bottle is next level stupid, been to a few MVA's and incineration's involving gas bottles and containered flammables and needless to say the outcomes aren't pleasant.

My personal favorite is the mattress tied onto the vehicle roof, with the ropes passing through the windows.
of course then the mattress folds over at the rope point.
