Kings have told me that their springs are 30% stiffer than factory but the numbers on here say the spring rate for standard rate springs is 660 lb/in. Lovells have told me their springs are 30% stiffer and the rate is 800 lb/in. If the factory springs are in the order of 600 lb/in then the Lovells spring rate is about right.

What I'm geting at is are the King springs linear or progressive? If they're linear, is the spring rate 660 lb/in as quoted in the table here?

Progressive springs generally have 2 rates listed in the specifications. Since Kings have only supplied one rate, I assume them to be a linear spring. To be certain, a visual inspection will reveal a linear spring to have constant spacing between coils and progressive springs to have varied spacing between coils of the spring:

Your set-up is identical to mine (except ECB alloy, not factory).
With the Kings fitted last week I have standard height, or thereabouts, and have eliminated the severe nose-dive.
The ride is not rough and the vehicle behaves acceptably now.
I used Kings KTFR-101 front, KTRR-102 rear. Front dim 765 and rear 770, with full tanks, airbags at 5psi, which I believe are not impacting the height.

Got Bilsteins and Lovells TFR-118 fitted to the front. Bottom of the rim to trim was 735mm before, 770mm after with circlip on lowest position. Happy with the height. Hope it dosn't sag much. Waiting to fit the rear springs (TRS-119) when they arrive.

Edit: I'm still suspicious that the Grande mount is different to the other models.
The Lovells 64612489 shock on the left is an 80 series Landcruiser shock that I have fitted to my Grande, the Toyota TEMS shock is on the right. The different size pin is obvious, but the different mounting arrangement in the aftermarket bush means that this is not an issue:

Ended up changing the rear springs from TRS-119's to TRR119's. Rear coilrites leaked. Without the bags, the rear was sitting at 780mm empty boot with a full tank. When the back was loaded or trailer connected, the rear sagged 20mm so the back of the car was riding lower than the front. TRR's are 20mm taller. I'm now at 820mm at the rear will a full tank and empty boot. The rear now rides 20mm higher than the front when measureing from the ground to the bottom of the side step.

Does anyone know the free length and spring rate for Kings standard springs? KTFS-101 and KTRS-102.

First of all I would like to say that this thread is brilliant, so much really useful info, geez it makes life easy

I found these specs for the Old Man Emu 80 series rear shocks here http://www.offroad80s.com/shock-lengths-t511.html

Old Man Emu Rear 80 series shocks

                      Part# l Open l Closed
                      N74E* | Firm | 24.4" (619.76mm) | 14.6" (370.84mm)
                      N71E | Soft | 24.4" (619.76mm) | 14.6" (370.84mm)

They should be a perfect length for my proposed suspension upgrade, Probably go the soft (N71E) given the Prado should be lighter than an 80 series.

I have sent ARB an email requesting specs on their shock, hopefully they confirm these stats to be correct.

                      Cheers Andrew

Andrew, I'm glad you found this thread useful. Those shocks look great for what you want to achieve. Once you confirm the specs let me know and I'll add the data to my first post.

For anyone considering 80 series rear shocks, make sure they aren't "big bore" shocks like the Tough Dog BMX1111/2 I see listed on the 80 series forum. They have a 70mm casing and they'll contact the diff housing unless you use some spacers on the bottom mount, which is not recommended. Most are up to a 60mm casing like the Tough Dog BM401111, which will fit without issues. Any 80 series rear shock that is listed for the 150 series or FJ Cruiser will also fit the 120 series.

Confirmed with ARB that open is 620mm and closed is 370mm so just perfect for my set up

I'll measure them when they come just to double check!

                          Cheers Andrew

                            Hi guys,

I was about to swap out the springs in the front that came with my new prado with Lovells TFR-118HD to take the extra weight of the bullbar, batteries and winch that I've put on.

Is this spring rate figure correct (984) as it seems much greater than all the others. Will this spring be too high with the accessories and the diesel engine?

I had the MD springs in the front of the 90 series with the same accessories but petrol engine and it sagged quite a bit
                            Cheers, Leon

Although the spring rate is quite high compared to the others, the free length is shorter than factory springs. So in effect, there is less compression but it is compensated by the higher spring rate to give a reasonable preload to achieve lift.

Lovells springs are more of a handling upgrade than a raised height upgrade spring. The front springs have a high spring rate, but are just too short to give any substantial lift unless you are able to raise the spring seat on the strut to compensate for the shorter spring.
