  • Steering rack bush replacement

I'm up for steering rack bushes due to excess rack movement. Has anyone done this with the car on jack stands? I was planning to unbolt the two rack mount bolts and remove the bush halves with an air chisel.

Feedback on difficulty would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi gxl d4d
I would like to say that its a simple job, but!
I am pretty sure that the removal of the rack is about the only way to access the bushes, as the steering shaft, hydraulic lines and rack ends hold the thing in place. This and the tight fit of factory bushes really add to the challenge.
Your D4D engine will be slightly different of coarse. The rack mounting will be common however.
    Cheers

Cheers, just the info I was after. I'll check oit the mounting when I get back. The instructions on the Superpro website had me thinking the mounting was different.

      Thanks,

I owned a 95 series from new for 18 years. Early in its life Pedders said the steering rack bushes had gone and needed replacing. The vehicle was still in warranty (18 months old) so went back to Toyota who put in a new rack as they don't sell bushes only, but it had the same problem, a lot of side to side movement when steering. When eventually the rack needed replacing due to leaking, I had a changeover one fitted and they used poly bushes instead of rubber.
I thought this was a step forward as no more side to side movement, but from that time on I had to replace my rack a number of times.
This is my theory - The hard poly bushes transmit all shock loads to the rack, prematurely wearing the inner rack ends. The soft genuine bushes absorbed the shocks more, therefore making the rack last longer.
        Just my 2 cents worth.
