  • GVM and Old Man Emu suspension upgrade

    Hi all,

Forgive me if this sounds like a mechanical question a non-mechanic would ask, but that's what it is.....

I am trying to get my GVM down below 2900kg on my 120 for an upcoming trip - with a 200kg ball weight from my new camper it's proving tricky!. However I had a chap tell me today that as I have put the Old Man Emu suspension upgrade on my car I shouldn't have any trouble as that would have increased the GVM. That didn't sound right to me, but I didn't know enough to debate it with him.

Can someone knowledgeable in such things please confirm or deny?

    Thanks
    Spike

Only a GVM upgrade will increase the GVM!

An aftermarket suspension kit may well better handle higher GVM's but without the new plate it wont be legal.
    Cheers

Thanks for that 120D4D, I thought that was the case but wasn't sure.

I reckon I've got the same or less accessories on my car than a lot of folks, but I took it over the weighbridge with the trailer attached and got a very rude shock. The ball weight of the camper measured 200kgs, but with only about 30L of fuel, no people and none of the normal "extras" I'd take on a long trip (spare wheel, fridge, food etc), the car was at 2,780kgs!. No problems with GCM, ATM or GTM, but given the car's GVM limit of 2900kgs, we will go well over by the time I fill the fuel tanks, add three bodies and luggage.

      Some thinking to be done.......

If you are in Melbourne, contact these guys. http://morwellsprings.ypsitesmart.com.au/

They upgraded the GVM in my car. I don’t know if they do Prado’s but worth asking. They do a lot of Patrols, 200 series and other Toyota’s.

Thanks men, I'd be really interested to know if they can doing anything. I suspect it wouldn't be cheap if they can. I'm in Sydney but it might be worth a holiday south.

I've been looking into new suspension this week (one of my Bilsteins has died) and I'm also interested in a GVM upgrade. I had a mob north of Sydney recommended to me, called Climax Suspension. They said that they'd never done a GVM upgrade on a 120 series and I'd probably be up for around $5k to get it done. They said the main cost is for the engineers and that they'd need the car for a few days to do their assessments. They recommended a Koni/Kings combo.
I also spoke to ARB about OME. Their lift will get you 25mm in the front and 40mm in the back. Cost was about $1900, but you might get 10% off as the Sydney camping and caravan show is on at the moment.
Interested to know how you get on with Morwell Springs!

$5k is a bit rich for my blood! Better to lose some weight I think. Razorback, did Morwell Springs respond to your email?

I have the OME suspension and those lift heights are about right.
