  • New suspension time but confused with options!!

    Hi guys,

I have a stock 120 D4D that I'm prepping for some touring. I have the usual suspects in mind - snorkel, steel bull bar and suspension upgrade etc. The bar is going to be either ARB or TJM, although I'm still undecided on a winch. However, the suspension has me flummoxed!! I won't be carrying a huge load - probably 100-150 kg of gear but I'm keen to keep the rise nice and forgiving. It's my daily drive and I like the smoothness compared to my other car with it's large wheel/low profile tyres. Having read through the huge number of pages here, I'm liking the sound of the Ironman Foamcell Pros but I'm not sure about the springs. Does anyone have any info on a suitable set of springs that match the valving of the shocks and give a modest lift - 40-50mm - but are still comfy? I'm also happy to consider other shock options - I'm still liking the Kings/Bilstein combo (not the short ones!). Any advice appreciated as I just seem to be going around in circles!!!

Hector google Zordo suspension. John is in Brisbane but happy to ship and will give you good honest advice. If you come for a run he will fit you as well. Worth the call.

I had looked at Zordos but I figured they're too far away. Might be worth a chat if they ship though.

Bilstein shocks and Dobinson springs, Heavy Duty all round. Save you from the dreaded front droop after getting all your other fruit fitted. If you cant afford the Billies, go with EFS. My combo has lasted me 6 years of harsh punishment.

Based on my experience, Bilsteins and King Springs. If you want lift go the 50 mm Standard weight. It will give you the ride quality that is comfortable for touring. It will carry about 150 kg extra. With the Bilsteins you can preload the springs to account for the weight of the Bullbar and winch. I use ARB and RUNVA 10000lb. I recently fitted EFS and don’t like by comparison, there seems to be too much stiction in the shocks. I strongly suggest not getting Heavy Duty springs unless you carry a lot of weight all the time. I use Firestone Airbags to adjust for the occasional heavy weight I may carry at times. I have been using this setup for many years.

Have plumped for Ironman coils and Foam Cell shocks. They seemed the best in my performance/cost calculations. I'm also fitting their bull bar as I can't justify the extra $700 for an ARB or TJM. I know they might not be quite as good but they've quoted $3,300 for bar and suspension fitted and wheels aligned which I thought was pretty good. Kings and Billies would have been close to $2000 on their own. The new Ironman bars look pretty good too - better in the flesh than the pictures. Will report back once they're fitted and settled.

Dobbos and Billys weren't that much (around 14-1600) from memory, lots of people on here happy with their foam cells though so happy motoring.

Well, the Ironman springs and foam cell shocks were fitted a couple of days ago. First impressions are good - much more supple than the ageing old units. The front is sitting a little high as I went with the HD springs up front due to the bull bar. I still have a second battery and winch to install so this should bring it down and be more of a match for the rear. I just need to get out on the trails and give them a good test.

The biggest difference you'll notice is when you're in the rough stuff the car will ride so much better. I was amazed at the change in the cars handling over harsh terrain from the stock units- car is a little stiffer on the road but it's also much better off the tarmac.

I thought I'd post an update on the new suspension as it's been a month or so and I've just come back from a bit of a road trip down to the South coast. Everything has settled down nicely and seems to have become more compliant. I'm not even noticing the fact that the front has HD springs and I haven't installed a second battery and winch yet. It's so much better on road - comfy but too much extra body roll. Did a little bit of off-roading at the weekend and it was so much better than with the the old springs/dampers.
