  • Formula suspension

    Hi guys,
I am looking at changing out the airbags in my Grande for coils. I have been doing a lot of research into it and think I have settled on a combo. I don't do any hard off road driving, manly dirt, corrugations and beach, but do tow a 1400kg camper trailer. Because funds are tight, and have spoken to Fulrum Suspension, and am looking at the Formula shock P/no. 50019 with the Kings spring kttr102AB for the rear, and the Formula strut P/no. 40010 with Kings KTFR101 on front. If anybody has any advice on this combo, it would be appreciated. Would I need to also fit coil over bags to help with the weight of camper, or would these spring be sufficient ?
    Cheers guys.

Never heard of them. How much are they slugging you for it all?

You haven't stated what weights you have over the front and rear, and also the towball weight of the camper and frequency of towing vs as a daily driver.

Thanks for the reply's guys, they quoted me $1250, but that was with coil over airbags included. I would still have to fit it myself, $1900 fitted, but I know a guy who could help me fit them. The front of the Prado is stock basically, has a sovereign bar, no dual battery but may install 1 in the future. Rear has Kings drawers with my tools and compressor in them. Ball weight of the camper is 150kg. I mostly use it for a daily, that being said, I have owned it for 12 months and only done 9000km. We would tow the camper maybe 6 times a year.

The KTRR-102AB rear spring has a free length of 405mm and a rate of 260lb/in and according to Kings is good for "40mm raised height 0-100kg load":

I would suggest if you go for these springs, you will definitely need polyairs or similar in the rear when towing. Another option is AMTS coils.

Thanks for the info Pete, I was sure that they told me the KTRR-102AB were 0-200kg. I will definitely have to check with them about that. Is AMTS still selling his springs ? I have tried looking on the forum, but cant find the info on them. As you can probably tell, Im a total noob when it comes to Prado's, being this is my first.

AMTS coils come in 3 flavours:
120ABMD for a 40-50mm lift at standard weight
                  120ABHD for 40-50mm lift up to 175kg
                  120ABHHD for 40-50mm lift for 175kg - 300kg

All details are on the suspension database: https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/...nsion-database
Send a PM to AMTS and he will let you know what's available.

The only other option is to fit a Dobinsons airbag to coil conversion kit (part number WA59-561K). At $350AUD not including coils, this is the most expensive option but it does allow you to fit any Prado rear coil you want: https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/...207#post745207

Thanks Pete, the Dobinsons kit could be an option. I have PM'd AMTS so I will wait to hear if he still has any coils going.

                    Cheers mate.

If you decide to go with the KTRR-102AB, Supercheap have them for a good price, but it does confirm on their website that they are a 0-100kg spring:

                        Hi all,
Reviving an old post. Just wondering if anyone had feedback on Formula Suspension by Fulcrum. Not a lot of info around for any vehicle let alone Prado specific info. I’ve been quoted approx $1700 fitted with KTFR-101H front springs, KTPR-102 (progressive) rears and airbags. Vehicle is a 2009 120 series diesel with steel bar, dual batteries and winch over the front end and a set of drawers plus camper trailer (200kg approx ball). We are planning on touring for about 4 months beginning mid year.
My current setup is the Bilstein A712/A713 kit with king springs that was installed 10 years ago by Fulcrum. Im only looking to replace this due to its age and approx 200k on them to date as I don’t want reliability issues cropping up on this trip. I’m also concerned about the rear shock issues that are well documented here.
Any thoughts or feedback regarding the formula kit are appreciated.
                        Cheers
                        Sam

pepper Did you end up going with the Fulcrum suspension? Interested in your thoughts. Need to replace shocks & springs on my 2008 120 petrol and was considering these guys.

SouTex Yes, I did go with the Formula 4x4 kit through Fulcrum. Very happy with the setup and ended up using progressive rear springs with HP airbags also. Big improvement from the ageing kit that was removed.

Soon after install we took off on a run down through central Queensland and back up the coast to Cairns over 3-4 weeks. Setup performed very well towing our Cub Escape (approx.1.6t with about 180kg on the ball) on corrugated gravel/tarmac we mostly stuck to. Sure footed ride but comfortable which seems in line with other reports.

Sorry for the delay in getting back, been a while since I last poked around PP.
