  • Suspension / compressor on Prado120

Hi Guys, I have a Prado Grande 120. Currently in WA heading Nth with the rear suspension issues. sometimes works fine, sometimes not.

Been to Toyota to check if there are any codes. NONE ? Ask Toyota to check for leaks = NONE? $160 per hr for the worst diagnostics ever !!! Recommendations = NONE ??

Question, anyone know if the compressor runs while the car is in motion ? I am guessing that it does and concerned I may burn it out to keep the car self levelled while towing a van.

I have booked the car in to have the airbags replaced with genuine replacements at Carnarvon and have ordered air bag man "emergency" kit which is just a couple of valves to enable manual inflation if needed.

There is definitely a leak somewhere as the rear is levelled ( inflated) then the van hitched up and stopping for a cuppa ( engine off) the rear sags, start engine compressor runs, all self levelled good to go, run down the road all good, stop to sight see the rear sags and compressor runs again. With van attached and stopped at a rest stop the compressor will run 3x times in 10 minute period.

Am hoping that with air bags replaced the rear will stay inflated and compressor will only run once to inflate.

Question. - Is it possible to wire up a gadget that will let me know when the compressor runs? so I can measure the duty cycle of the compressor before and after air bag replacement.
Question - anyone fitted the air bag man emergency inflation valves kit?

Trying to keep the car standard.
Trying to complete Perth - Darwin - Sydney

    Thanks
    Rob

Just replace the bags. Genuine Toyota are best and around $500 a pair from Amayama or Partsouq.

Dont do the valves unless there is further issues..

Have you got under and sprayed the bags and lines with soapy water to check for leaks yet? The fact its a 120 the bags will be due for replacement by now.

Yes, you can wire a buzzer or LED or whatever to the compressor power terminals.

Stop overthinking the issue, fit new bags and see how it goes. Even with good bags you will hear the compressor run every now and again..

    What is your towball weight?

      Thanks for the reply,
Yep I just bit the bullet and had Toyota replace the bags and they were definitely showing signs of age deterioration and the car is handling much better and coping better with the weight in the rear and van.
Towball weight is 170kg. so not too bad ( I think) .
The suspension now goes up / down / neutral as it should, all seems to work great. Toyota charged me about $1100 all up inc GST and done in 1.5 hrs in Carnarvon WA which I am quite happy with, service was great, enthusiastic bunch, previous experience with the problem helpled. . Much better than Toyota in Perth who charged me $160 for diagnostics and then said Duh, we don't know.
I think Toyota could suggest that replacing the airbags could cure the issue.

The old air bags seem hard to troubleshoot by soaping.
      Thanks again

PS - the compressor runs much less, I think it must have constantly (?) running while driving to try and keep the air up to the deteriorated bags.
