  • Testing TEMS shockie/strut

    Hey all,

Recently had one of the front TEMS shockies out getting the lower bush replaced, and was unsure what is normal with them. when they are out of the car should i be able to push them in and pull them out with equal force?

I can move them in/out with a medium amount of force leading me to think they still have a bit of life left in them, is this correct?

FYI they are the original units (all 4 of the TEMS, 260k km), no oil leakage and no noticeable suspension bounce when you push the front down.

    Cheers in advance.
I thought I would be differant and get a silver prado...

At 260 kms, remove and file them in the bin. They will be stuffed. mine flogged out at 100,000.

Ironically thats what Pedders said, then tried to sell me some general shocks for stupid money...
Ive just done 10k of a mix of highway and corrugations and the wagon is as comfortable as it was when I brought it (she's leaning over when cornering, but thats for another thread), and as far as I can tell the shocks are working as they should so dont really want to replace if its not needed.
The first 250k was pretty much town driving haha

Most likely won't be equal force as the valving is usually different. You also need to be aware what comfort setting the TEMS shocks were in before you pulled them out.

hmm didn't take note of where the switch was, but would say 'comfort' as thats what it stays on most of the time.
the difference wasn't notable, that said i didn't pay much attention to equal force other than I squeezed, and then pulled it out. whats a brand new TEMS shock feel like?

Hey PPers, just to let ya all know my outcome, much to most of your disgust I ended up ordered 4x new Toyota shockies from Amayama landed in Perth for $2100 (que outrage from TEMS haters).

thanks AMTS/Piggy for the advice in this and the other thread.

Hi All, just wanted to update anyone interested. I received the new TEMS tojo shocks and have since installed them and have to say wow, it drives like a different car. My shocks where original with 260k on them so that is to be expected I guess haha! I haven't had weight on the roof yet, but there is no more body roll while driving around town, so I can only imagine I won't have to pucker up at every corner while doing 110kph. Also you can really feel the difference now when you change from sport to comfort.

Only dramas I had where on the fronts, make sure you line the actuator with the valving on the shock before you bolt it all up, or you have to do it all again. No major just adds extra couple minutes to the job.

              Cheers for the advice.

letterboxman. I am also bracing to receive some rage from TEMS haters by ordering new shocks for new-to-me Prado 120 Petrol with 330K. I am sure the shocks are stuffed at this point. I am not sure if the original have been replaced at all. I just replaced the airbags and considering how bad they were, I am sure the shocks are as bad.

However, as it is quite an investment, I want to be sure that my shocks need replacement. Is there any definitive way of checking TEMS shocks' health? The ride is quite bouncy but I am also running cheap tyres that the Prado came with (Maxtrek SU800). I also checked the difference between comfort and sport and I can feel very little difference in the ride.

I'm more amazed that anyone considers a shock to possibly still be any good after 300,000 kms.

KYB supply toyota with the TEMS shocks any good mechanic can order them straight from KYB and you wont have to pay the toyota mark up.

replaced 2 (still working after 380,000kms) TEMS front shocks because i hit a pot hole and broke the shock mount.

I am not sure if the shocks have been changed by previous owner. I wouldn't expect them to last that long but mine came with no maintenance history.
