  • Cooper ATRs

I am the owner of 2003 Prado 120 series, T/Diesel, Auto. I had Cooper HTs on vehicle before 265x70x17 which were pretty good. Need new set of tyres. Considering going back to original tyre size of 265x65x17 and wondering what new 265x65x17 ATRs like. They are not light truck construction but undestand quite good offroad.
    Can anybody assist?
ALSO: What are the D'tronic computer chips like in 120series T/Diesel. Have heard that make engine a little smokey. What is diesel consumption like with chip?

    ATR's

I have a 03 TD 120 series also but manual, have had the ATR's on for 12,000 so far without complaint. plenty of grip offroad and on. doesn't appear to be excessive wear that i'm spotting at all.

      coopers 265x65x17 ATRs

      Snelly,
I've got a 03 Petrol Grande and put coopers 265x65x17 ATRs on but have only done about 1000k's. No offroad. Paid $1200 for four fitted and wheel alignment.

Can't say they're much noisier than the grandtreks but haven't done much with the windows down. Otherwise quiet inside.

It's been raining in the Gong lately and the wet doesn't seem to be a problem.

Drove over the mountain to Camden yesterday and this was some high speed (100km/h) on single lane roads and seemed ok.

      So far so good.

        Hi Snelly,

I've got ATRs on my 120 Prado. I love them, I've done about 10,000km with them, they are great off road, and quiet and grippy on the road. I've raved about them elsewhere on this forum, check the 120 section.

        Cheers,

        Drew.

I got $1000 as a trade in on the GrandCraps on a set of (5) Duellers.

Tyres are great, havent got a complaint about them yet.

Also depends what type of terrain you're driving over when 'offroad'.

Personally I'd never go to a highway construction tyre for offroad use, but would stick to a light truck carcass. (That's the type of construction, not the tread pattern). I've been on too many trips with people who have highway construction carcass tyres and stake them too easily.

The ATR's come in both highway construction, and light truck construction. If you want to go back to 265x65x17 your stuck with highway construction. If you stay with the 265x70x17, you can get them in light truck (LT) construction. http://www.coopertyres.com.au/tyres/atr_specs.htm

As I don't know what sort of driving you'll be doing, just thought I'd throw something in for you to think about.

I'm up to 14000 now, still look new to me.

Conservatively i'd say at least 98% on road.

                Dtronic

                Snelly,
to begin with the Dtronic is not a chip, but a complete module that plugs into your existing ECU.

Although I do not have a 120 my 95 series TD has the same engine and a Dtronic which I fitted when they first came out. I have not noticed any extra diesel smoke since I fitted it 2 years ago.

Fuel economy has been very good. I average 10.5 -11.5 L/100 with normal driving to and from work. Given that I drive from the Gold Coast into the mountains of the hinterland, that's not too bad. I have an ARB roof rack and draws full of recovery gear, so it is not as though I am travelling light. I do have a snorkel and fitted a K&N filter which help.

                Towing a 16ft (1600ish kg) caravan, I average 13-16 L/100km, worst was 18.

Despite the bad press, I also have 2 Hiclones, which do make a difference. I removed them for a couple of weeks and put them straight back in.

Next is a mandrel bend 2 3/4 inch exhaust with larger dump pipe.

Read a report from some not so happy 120 owners of the Cooper ATR's over on the 120's forum. Apparently quite a few have delaminated, causing some pretty spectacular damage to the panelwork and bits n pieces of the car !http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/gro...os/browse/eab0

Need some advice. I will picking up my new prado this weekend and i am looking at swapping grandtreks for cooper atr's. Have been offered $800.00 change over sounds like a good deal after reading some of your posts. Are the atr's really that much better than the grandtreks?. By the way that is change over for 5 tyres fitted and balanced.

60,000 klm on 265/65/17 ATRs just replaced them, tyre joint reckons about another 10000 left, but I used them for a camper trailer
Great on road, no issue's with wet etc, no noise issues and better on road than grandcrap. I run them at 40psi and wear has been very even across the tyre face
Off road a good moderate ATR that does all that I need. They have done Vic High country, Oodnadatta, Mereenie Loop, NT and Flinders
Would I reccomend them ?...yes, but would prefer LT construction, Im just not willing to change tyres until warranty expires because of past dealings with Toymota Corp
I thnink they are a good all round tyre with excellent onm road capability and better than expected off road performance at appropriate tyre pressures

                            Matt,

Glen runs Darren's suspension as well .

Glen, have you had any luck getting paint rubbing fixed on the rear door?

                              Hey Stan,
Funny you should ask...took the playdo in today for an idler pulley bearing that was shot (and new brake pads and a service), asked 'em to look at the paint rub whilst it was there, so I'll know more tommorrow...let you know what they say
When I enquired a little while ago Penrith Toyota (my nearest dealer) said they had seen a few....the car went to Lander Toyota (near wifes work) because of the shot bearing ..it was getting seriously noisy and grumbling, they said never seen the problem (tyre rub) before...anyway more tomorrow, Im not overly worried about it. Must admit though, for all my bitching about crappy toyota service and warranty, these guys were top notch...no dramas with the bearing and "discounted" my servcie to $200 and 4 wheel pads to $200, so I was pretty impressed by them, no arguments, no checking books, just got on with it..some days are diamonds eh !!!
