  • Wheel size and offset questions

I've just ordered a new GXL prado from toyota which should be here in another 3-4 weeks and I'm looking for wheels. Just wondering what offset the standard 17x7 wheels are? Also what size with what offset are people fitting to get a wider rim and tyre under the car? I've heard around the place about people fitting 285/70 R17 tyres but they have rubbing issues on the front upper control arms etc, has anyone bothered to work out what offset whould recify this issue?

The standard offset is P30. 30mm positive.

To run 285/70/17 you need 50mm lift and P50 offset wheels.

is there any troubles fitting 8 inch wide wheels? Just there seems to be a bigger selection of wheels to choose from than the 17x7

            ookami,
I have to ask why would you go for a tyre that not many companies make & is way over size. (at least 70 mm oversize)
I sure that warranty & legal issues would be void

I've spoken to toyota and have found out as long as tyres meet the min required speed rating and cause no other dramas warranty , should not be a problem. As for the legalities, I'm still trying to sort this out, QT is getting back to me hopefully today, but from what they said it may be as simple as getting a mod plate if the tyres don't meet the standard. Which i may have to anyway for the suspension modifications i have in mind. So far all i have found out is the overall rolling diameter must be no larger or smaller than 1inch difference from what the vehicle came with. A 265/70R17 would be the max if this is the case. I found a 285/70R17 pretty easily found, some brands of tyres are actually restricting me to this size. What size tyre do most other people run?

                ookami,
There has been a lot written about this in the past.

I think you will find most people run 265/70x17 so as to get a more aggressive & light truck construction.(or a tyre with a stronger side wall)
Just out of interest technically the 265/70x17 is slightly too large in diameter by most of the states regs.
Bonus:- You will find that the speedo will just about spot on with the 265/70x17

I would suggest that if you went down the path of the 285/70's you may end up with some performance & gearing issues

                Cheers,

Yeah I never considered the gearing and performance problems. As for the state regs the qld state reg is the the overall rolling diameter must be no more or less than 1inch (height or width) than the factory fitment.

I think you will find that the Qld Transport reg is for no larger than 15mm in rolling circumference, and going to a 265/70/R17 tyre increases standard tyre by 34mm..... :? :? Please correct me if I am wrong, and I will be fitting them straight away. I confirmed this with QT over the phone approx 2 months ago. When QLD eventually (supposedly looking at it) adopts the National ADRs this will increase to 50mm.

I have also heard through the industry that getting an engineer certificate for the tyre size increase maybe harder than you think. Make sure you have an engineer who will certify the tyre size increase before you go to the expense.

                      Cheers

Regardless what the rules are, it can be easily over come with a mod plate.

I'm consfued some people say that the stock rims with a +25 offset rub with a 285 how would a larger positive offset would resolve rubbing, where do the 285 rub?

A,p50 offset wheel would move the the wheel in closer to the susp, A 0 offset or neg offset would be better to move the tyre out, would be better.

I've always been confused about the negative/positive wheel measurements. If you brought the wheel in towards the suspension I suspect it would help stop it hitting the wheel arch on turning.
