  • Repairing scratched 120 Series GXL Rims

    Hi all,

I have noticed the alloy wheels on our 120 GXL have been scratched by the previous owner. The scratches are on the flat section coming out of the opening in each wheel, not on the face of each "spoke" as it were...looks like dirt has been wiped off that area instead of washed off, or perhaps they have used some kind of harsh brush to clean that area and have scratched them as a result.

The scratches are not swirls, they are straight lines coming straight out of each opening.

Is there a way this can be fixed without doing more damage? It appears the surface is covered with some kind of thin clear plasticky coating that I gather cannot be polished?

I would not normally worry, but the brake dust builds up in the scratches and makes the damage look much worse and is very hard to clean the scratches out.

    Cheers,

    David

Re: Repairing scratched 120 Series GXL Rims

    G'day David,

I had a similar situation with a Pathfinder, many many moons ago now. It was driven into a gutter causing some nasty scratches to the alloy rims. They also appeared to be coated.

Anyway, we took it to a smash-repairs shop and when it came back, I could not see any evidence of the scratches. I have no idea what process they used to fix it, but it looked like new when done.

Maybe start with a couple of smash-repairers and get quotes. Of course it will be great if you can post your findings on here if you go that route.

    Cheers,
    LFaR.

Ok, thanks. The scratches aren't as deep as gutter-marks, it just looks like they have wiped mud off without diluting it first.

I will give that a go.

      Cheers.
