Re: What Brand Tyres and Size do you use?

For Queenslanders - Ok, I contacted Dept of Transport modifications section. There is no permitted mod for running tyres larger than that stated on the manufaturers placard other than up to 15mm diameter greater than standard. Irrespective of an engineers certificate.

265/70x17's are 26.5mm greater in diameter than 265/65x17's therefore you have 2 problems -

1 - The vehicle is now defective and you will likely have your vehicle put off the road and cop a ticket

2 - Insurance can be made void if you have an accident on them.

Unless Toyota wish to review it's tyre placard reccomendations................

nice.. so what's thoughts on the idea that someone raised about getting a letter from toyota? i would suggest it wouldn't be the easiest thing to achieve but did the impression you got from QT be that it wouldn't matter, i.e. letter or no letter the "plate" says 265/60 so that's the rules?

I think if Toyota re-issued a new placard stating alternative tyre sizes that covered 265/70x17's then that wouldn't be a drama, however getting Toyota to do that in the first place would be a lengthy process and don't forget the $$$$ that could be involved.

The best option in queensland for mudders is 245/70/17 which is almost identical to the original size. If you look at the tread contact area on the road of a dunlop AT20 and compare it to a 245 mudder that has a squarer shoulder you have basically the same contact area on the road even though one is a 265 vs 245 as the 265 has a very rounded shoulder. I am sure their are some pics somewhere of someone who has done this.

              Hi All,
I understand this is an old thread but thought I would put in my 2 cents
              Currently running Kumho Roadventures 265/65/17
Not a bad tyre so far (they were on my beast when I purchased it) have had them running with mud, sand and on the highway and cant complain about them.
seems to have very little road noise. seem to have very little wear, have done close to 10000k's on em.

              John
