  • Which A/T's?

    Hi all,

My Bridgestone Duellers are now in need of replacement and I'm looking for recommendations as to which AT's to go for. As expected, I'm reading all sorts of conflicting opinions so thought it wouldn't hurt to ask here.

The car's used mainly for day to day use for a short commute, I have another car for longer 'road only' trips but it does the occasional camping/beach trip, 4wd tracks, etc. and will hopefully be off to the Kimberley and Gibb River Road next year.

Anyway, I had initially thought of BFG KO2's, as everyone seems to have them, but then looked around and saw the reviews for Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ P3.

Since then, I've looked at Falken AT3 and General Grabber AT2, Hankook Dynapro, Dick Cepek Open Country, and all sorts of others. All seem to have good reviews, barring the BFG's which I read in a couple of places that they had weak sidewalls. And that the Mickey Thompsons were possibly too aggressive for day to day use due to road noise.

    Any recommendations here?

Edit: Sorry, just seen that there's a dedicated area on here for 120 Wheels/tyres- admin: please move if necessary.

    Thanks

+1 on General Grabber AT2 265/70/17 LT under rated tyre in Oz, very quiet, like really quiet but this is down to tread design, I have 120 V6, would happily put them on again except if I could find the General Grabber AT3s (new version).
I have 23,000 ks on them and they have heaps of tread left, I Drive mostly commuting (hence why I wanted quiet tyres) they have huge grip in wet and dry on road but require at least 36-38 psi in them for nice feel as below this they seem to be slow to turn in ( I run them 38-40 F 40-42 R down to 18 sand, 26-30 off road) , have found them good off-road, but look in USA/Canada "Tire" forums for more reviews as their market is much larger than ours.

I'm considering the Toyo AT2 as they seem to have good reviews and you can get 5 with wheel alignment for the price of 4 BFG's

New 2015 150s GX 5 seater with floor mats, towbar and a big wish list
Previously a 2004 120s 1KZ GX silver manual with stuff
before that a 1996 RV6 90S with lots of gear

I have used BFGs for about 250000 km over 20+ years and 3 4x4s on some of the worst roads in the country. One puncture only (nail fixed with plug). I would still be running them but I couldn't get them when I picked up my new car. They do tend to crack between the treads and they chip badly on rough roads but they are tough and not prone to sidewall damage or excessive noise. The tread gets harder with age but didn't seem to cause trouble in the wet. I now have Cooper AT3 light truck and so far they are terrific. Quite on road and secure in the wet. They are about to get a big outback test but I know from experienced acquaintances that they work well..

The thing to keep in mind when gauging opinions about tyres is that everyone has a different opinion, based on their own personal experience of particular tyres, which is partly the result of the tyre quality, partly driving style, but largely just luck. So for any given tyre, most people will say they've used it for years without any problems, but a small number of people will think its the worst tyre ever and vow never to buy them again as long as they live. If you drive sensibly and adjust your pressures, nearly any good quality A/T will almost certainly do the job you need very well - but you could still be unlucky.

But with this in mind, if you read enough reviews there do seem to be some general patterns. Lots of people report serious chipping in BFG A/Ts both KO and KO2 (which was my experience). I've just fitted a set of Bridgestone 697LTs because the general consensus seems to be that they are very resistant to chipping and tend to wear nice and cleanly. They seem very suitable for my main use which is urban commuting and outback touring, although perhaps not the best for serious offroading.

Absolutely this. It appears that Hankook Dynapro RF10 with the current buy 3 get 1 free deal is the way i'll go...

            Thanks for the replies

When I was looking for the same thing a couple of years ago, I just went round in circles! Reviews on various websites and magazines seemed to be more like advertising for whatever tyre company gave them the goods. I eventually chose Mickey Thompson STZs as they were a road-biased tyre, tough and the lugs seemed to be reasonably spread out. To say I've been impressed is an understatement. Great on road with only a little noise and perform way better than they should off road. Minimal wear in the two years and 50k kms. I think they've been superseded now though. My next choice was BFG All Terrains. As already mentioned, a good deal is hard to ignore, although there may be a reason why they're being discounted!

It's totally subjective. I went with KO2's as they were highly rated by a lot of people- I really like them so far, although have had a few arse puckering moments in the wet when they were newish (less than 5K) but this has since resolved itself. They seem to wear well, and so far have done a really good job in the few times I've had them off road.

I went with Nitto terra grapplers on buy 3 get 4 deal and happy with them so far. Only problem was a 6mm bolt through the tread after 1 week, hadn't even worn the nobbles off yet. Fortunately it could be plugged by the dealer so no damage done. Good grip in wet and dry, haven't done any sand or heavy 4wd yet but good on gravel roads as well.

I've driven on BFG's (AT's and MT's) for over 20 years on work vehicles. Mostly hilux's and Landcruisers. I rate them.

Having used BFGs which were awesome in the dirt but pretty hopeless on wet roads and Duellers which have worn incredibly fast and had punctures, I'm now looking for new tyres, would jump for BFGs except for the wet road issues which can be dangerous.

Has anyone used the Falken AT3Ws? Can you share your experience and thoughts, particularly interested in comparison to BFGs.

Report on Cooper AT3 LT. Just did a Simpson Desert circumnavigation which totaled 6000 km including the roads to and from the desert. 2200km in the desert were run at 16 psi hot and the surrounding roads at 26 psi hot. Tar to and from at 36 psi. Report? NO issues at all: no cuts , no chips, no cracks between the tread blocks as my BFGs on my 120 always suffered. They are at least as quiet on the road as standard tyres and much better in the wet. At 21000 km they are wearing perfectly evenly and at the current negligible wear rate I am sure that they will exceed 80000km. AND this was my second choice behind BFGs! I do note that other cars on the trip had BFG KO2s and they also had no issues and appeared to be less prone to chipping than the KO1s that I previously had. As those who have been to the Simpson area know, the roads all around the desert are tyre killers if you don't get pressures and speed right. I was worried about the AT3s but they took everything that I threw at them.

I am leaning towards the BFG ko2 as it sounds like they handle better on bitumen, and I know that they wear really well. My Dueller 697LTs will only just make it to 50k if I'm lucky and aren't great on the dirt.

                            Mickey Thompson ATZ-P3

Had the original ATZ since buying the 120, and swapped to the P3 version. Both have been excellent on and offroad.

Since 2008 have only one small leak from a nail in NT and had it repaired in Alice Springs. No other damage.

Cooper AT3. 140,000 hassle free kms in 4 years on a set so far. Still 7mm tread depth. Good on bitumen, good on gravel / dirt. As good as any other AT in the mud (in other words not that great). Excellent in the wet although by now the rubber has compressed that much they are starting to lose a bit of grip on wet roundabouts. I'd say they've been WELL worth the money.
