  • 2019 GXL bashplate, which one ?

Looking at replacing the factory bashplates on my 2019 GXL with something a bit more robust. Vehicle sees a lot of use in the Vic High Country !
What are other PP members using ? Kaon, ARB, Bushskinz TJM ?

I think kaon would be the best, I havnt got them but they sit higher for more clearance and the bolt heads are recessed so they don’t get damage and think they are cheaper too??

I have the Kaon. Fit perfectly, easy to fit, don't rattle, appear to be as strong as any others and cheaper.

I saw a youtube vid of a Kaon unit being fitted and liked the look of what I saw.
Pug, is the cut out in the sump plate for the oil drain plug actually useful or do you still need to remove the plate to change the oil ?
Dealer mechanics love having to remove bashplates to change engine oil !

I put a Bushskinz on the 90, had no oil drain section.
What a pain, especially with 5000k oil changes on the KZ.
Dropping a heavy plate on your chest out in the dust is no fun.

No problem with oil changes as it lines up with the sump drain.

How about the Custom Offroad stainless steel ones ? 3mm and weigh 13kg, I am looking at these at the moment, or the Kaon, which are 30kg and 4mm zinc plated steel.

I did look at the Custom Offroad as well as ARB, TJM and Bushskinz and decided on the Kaon.
Being 4mm steel the Kaon unit is heavier than some other UVP, but it does cover the auto trans pan which a lot of others don't. It has a larger than most oil drain opening which may mean I won't have a dealership moaning about UVP removal at service time. It also has a flatter front section which allows a better entry angle and may reduce the incidence of using the front end as a bulldozer up rocksteps etc. I frequent the Vic HC which can be murder on a vehicles undercarriage. The OEM bashplate on my previous Toyota 4WD is testimony to that. We'll see how the Kaon UVP performs !

Im in the same boat trying to decide which bash plates to go for. KAON looks like the best option as it gives best protection and approach angle. However i did notice in their installation video that you have to permanently remove the radiator support brackets which attached from the chassis cross member to the radiator support to fit the KAON bash plates. Does anyone see this as a concern? surely these support brackets are there for a reason.

I don't remember removing anything other than the original bash plates on my 2016. There are no stray parts lying around in my garage where I would normally put any removed bits.

I am also looking at bash plates and notice that Kaon removed radiator supports in installation video. I also thought Brown Davis bash plates looked sturdy and comes in 4 pce to cover 4WD actuator.

Has anyone had any experience with the Drivetech Rival 4x4 Underbody Armour for the Prado. They use a 6mm alloy material and also protect all the way from the front to the back of the transfer case.

I picked up some bushskinz front and sump plates when they had a 20% discount for PP members. They were around $200 which was a bargain for the quality. They're 4mm steel & very well made. The only downside is the bolts aren't recessed or protected like some other plates. I've sheared a bolt on them with a badly placed rock before. They also come with high tensile bolts which aren't ideal for UVP - I've swapped the bolts for normal ones so they deform if they take another hit instead of cracking/shearing. I got the black powdercoat but I'd skip that next time as it shows the scratches.

If I was buying again I'd go for the Kaon plates, cost is a fair bit more though.

I just had the KAON ones fitted and there are support brackets welded into the actual bashplate that take the function of those radiator supports that go out.
