  • Recovery points with new bullbar

    Hi,
im new to the 4wd scene and have a standard 2013 Prado gxl. All I have on it are the Roadsafe recovery points that I fitted about a year ago. I recently bought a camper trailer and noticed that when it was hooked up and the Prado was loaded up (people, esky, kayaks, etc) the rear end sagged a fair bit. The trailer is rated to 1100kg and while I haven’t weighed it I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be going over that. I was looking at putting in airbags to raise the rear end but after reading various forums and pages, I’m now also thinking about adding a bullbar and winch. I’m looking at doing some outback trips down the track but nothing planned in the near future, which is why I’m looking at the bullbar, and I figured if I’m adding a bar then I may as well go a winch too. So a few questions. If I add a bullbar, will I also need to get new recovery points, or can I keep the roadsafe ones or or do bars come with them already built in? While I’ll be doing some outback trips, most of our driving will be places like Moreton or Fraser so is a lift necessary or would you consider it a waste of money? Speaking of, which, I don’t have a lot to spend but I’d rather do things in the right order rather than, for example, putting in airbags just for the camper trailer and then having to throw that out and changing it down the track to add in a bullbar and winch. All thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Dave

Roadsafe recovery points should fit with bull bar. Worse case you may need to space the top bolt out to have them sit flat. No big deal.

airbags can be used even after suspension if reqd . Fwiw, I run helper bags in my lifted 2013 as it means I can run softer springs most of the time for a good ride, but pump up the airbags when towing to stop the sag.

if getting a winch & bullbar, then I’d suggest you’ll need new springs as the extra weight over the front will overwhelm the std springs.

X 2 regards new springs with a bullbar and winch. IMO for most outback trips you won't need a winch, definitely a bullbar as skippy is not real bright at times.
I would suggest having a good think about what type of touring you will be doing before committing to a winch as they are too heavy to have fitted if not really required. better to spend the dollars elsewhere and keep the weight down .

I finished installing recovery points last night. Dealer fitted OEM bullbar is on the vehicle. I purchased a kit, similar to Roadsafe, but cheaper via eBay.
A little bit more difficult to fit than I expected though.

The dealer fitted bolts on the bullbar (at the lower end of the recovery points) were really tight to remove. Ended up going to my neighbour's mechanic workshop where the rattlegun was adjusted right up. He also had a socket which fitted exactly. The heads were not quite metric 16mm nor any of my other socket types.
Then we noted that fitted bolts had fine fine thread which was different to threads on the bolts that came with the recovery points kit. So a trip to bolt supplier was on.

Also the wires welded to the nuts that are inserted into the chassis rails were rather weak.
One wire broke at the nut while only half way through tightening. Couldn't loosen or fully tighten the nut. Eventually loosened it with a bent bar, inserting the bar through the round hole near the nut and jamming the nut head enough while loosening with a spanner from the outside.
I recovered the nut using a magnetic flexible "wand".
Then I pre-ran the kit supplied bolts through the nuts with wires so they could be fully finger tightened against the chassis rails, before using a spanner. However, both sides had the wire break off again while tightening with a spanner to complete. So maybe hard to remove in the future.

I think you have found out why the kit was cheaper, the wires are normally only used to locate threaded plates, not to hold the plate/nut while you tighten the bolts. The threaded plate should be shaped so that it jams against the side/top etc. of the chassis rail when tightening.

            Leethal,

Somewhat agree with you. Making the better bolt plates would have helped. The extra cost would have been relatively small. What is annoying is that I felt the kit suppliers had not done a trial installation using their pieces for fitting. Anyway all done with that job.

From what I'm seeing here the roadside recovery points don't seem straightforward to fit? --> https://autobarn.com.au/ab/Autobarn-...BoCW8oQAvD_BwE

As of now I do NOT have a bull bar. Does anyone happen to know if these recovery points will work as intended with the original front bar? Will there be enough space to perform a successful recovery or will the front bar be in the way?
