I’m looking at buying a hand winch because I like the versatility of them in that I wouldn’t be restricted to a front pull and don’t have to worry about electrics failing in the middle of nowhere. Yes I know they can be hard work but I was wondering if anyone has experience with them and can recommend a brand?

Brand doesnt really matter a whole lot, because chances are you will use it once then sell it for a BB mounted winch.2007 120 GXL D4D 6sp Man - My Rig https://www.pradopoint.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=24945&d=1487341201

The Tirfor brand was around well before the disposable era.
Not that hard just slow but you can rest assured it will most likely get you out of any mess.
Given there cable drive best practice use damper blanket and only rated points, double line where possible, also carry spare sheer pins,

Used a lot of Tirfor hand winches in the early 80's as a member of a 4 wheel drive club back then. Agree with all the points above, they are hard work to use, however they will also get you out of most situations and really shine when sideways or rearward recovery is required albeit a slow process.
The other benefit we discovered back then was that it actually made you think twice before attempting a challenge on the track particularly one that could be avoided as it was quite a chore to get the hand winch out, set it up and then get on the end of the winch handle which was a real work out.
We still managed to get from the start to the finish of the Wirraba Ridge track (if anyone remembers that one) including climbing the rock wall using only Tirfor winches.
Obviously we had much more energy and enthiusm in those days not to mention not being very smart either.
Regards...Mick
