  • Wadign depths for 2016 150 Prado

    Hi all,

I am planning of going into the Victoria High Country for Australia day with my brand new diesel 150 Prado (Pick it up this week). I will be crossing the Murray at Tom Groggin.

At this stage I don't have a lift or snorkel. What depth can drive through before needing a snorkel/ diff breathers? I have heard anywhere up to 700mm. Thanks

  • #2
They are rated to wade 700mm
The intake is in the front fender I'm guessing it's higher than 700mm there is pther factors
    Diff and gearbox breathers, Electrics

I'd be careful without a snorkel water splashing up can also be an issue, wading tarp is definetly recommended, go slow for entry then steadly increase speed creating a Bow wave.

I am heading to the high country over Xmass only mod I'm doing is a snorkel not worth the risk

So does Prada need breather for general water crossing, say 700mm?
One day I went to ARB, the sales man even said don't worry about it, as Prados' is quite high, although they sell the kits..

Just pick up a breather kit from ebay and install the rear breather. It's the lowest.

Many have installed the rear breather line up behind the tail lights. Plenty high enough.

Will the salesman take responsibility for any damage? It's an easy job and a good first mod.

For the millionth time, Snorkels are for dust not water. By the time the intake goes under the car has already floated and your wheels are no longer touching the ground and you are going nowhere, right before the car fills with water and cuts out once the electrics get wet. Sucking water in won't happen first. And a snorkel won't stop water coming it once the airbox is under, the airboxis a vacuum and not airtight around the sides it will leak badly (but it won't because the car floats way before that).

The last time I went through a deep crossing without a snorkel the bottom of my filter got wet.
Fitted a snorkel, no more wet filter...

I went through a deep crossing and the rear end started to float, was a bit scary but managed to still have front on the ground. Best thing was no problems with water ingress.

I'd say if you have a bow wave and momentum, you won't have that issue. The intake is under the guard, without a snorkel it'll draw in water - if you've got momentum, your engine bay (and therefore, air box) should stay dry...?

There is no way I would attempt a water crossing where I knew the water level was going to be grill height or higher without a snorkel. Agree they are for dust but I certainly believe they also reduce the risk of water intake. It doesn't take much to get water splashing up into the guard where the standard intake is and it can take only a teaspoon of water to damage a diesel engine.

Crossed alot of deep rivers and there is no way I would of attempted them without a snorkel.
They are called a snorkel and all, Lost count the amount of times water was soild over the bonnet and they don't all float believe me.

The rear breather on the 150 is a little scratchy due to its location, that's the only 1 I extended.
After we toured Tassi none of the landcruiser with factory transfer and gearbox breathers ( including a 150 Prado )
Had any water there there oil, If there was ever a trip to drown a 4wd that was it

Looks like this guys snorkel paid off fairly silly but they do work

And a clip of a crossing in Vic that cost a motor

Many posts ago a gentleman named Ben from the US of A kicked off a thread about extending breathers. While he was detailing the FJ Cruiser which is sort of a Prado, albeit one with gender issues, he did talk about a number of his fellow 4wders having water ingress issues with the auto box and how expensive that became. As I said extending thebreathers is easy and a good way to get intimate with your Prado. Typically my first mod.

                            Unusual.
Obviously water ingress. But the video (from the drone) shows a lot smaller water crossing where the jeep stopped? End of video shows a much more sever and deeper crossing that more than likely did the damage.

Listening to his podcast reveals that he had done many deeper crossings previously (per photo of the deeper crossing) without any issue, but it was the shallow one that killed it. Part unlucky, part bad technique, and design of the airbox and intake on the Jeep.

See in the photo the air intake is right on the side of the air box, facing upwards and towards the drivers side. His theory is the water was just deep enough, and combined with his excess entry speed, caused water to splash up inside the engine bay and out the front of the bonnet (watch video again). This dumped a s***load of water into the intake.
