  • New 2017 Prado with Brake Issues

    Hi

I am after some help with a 4 week old 2017 Prado - puchased New

Fitted a Red Arc Tow Pro Elite brake Controller a week ago. Driving home one night, in heavy Melbourne traffic that the cars brakes were dragging. After creeping along, discovered the brake force increased. Pulled over, turned off etc, only to restart and find Brakes in the car are still coming on whilst travelling. They initially drag(like a foot hovering on the pedal) then increase in brake force as you travel to the point of overheat and struggle to move. (read- trying to get home ) Pedal is also rock hard like the booster is not working. Brake lights on the rear don't come on. Abs and check break lights eventually luminate on the dash. At this point, I struggled to 30kph flat to the floor trying to get off the road.

Tow trucked vehicle to Toyota. Tow pro and subsequent install was blamed. Paid an exorbitant amount of money to have it disconnected by the so called experts at Toyota as the cause was a brake controller.

Picked the car up from Dealer, and yes Prado Brakes are still coming on whilst travelling. Got 4 mins away from dealership

The so called facts according to Toyota.

The tow pro is back feeding to the can bus causing hill decent to come on

Has anyone had problems with a brake controller install. Are the new Prados so advanced that only they can work on them.

    Update 4/9
Got the car back from Toyota this afternoon. Vehicle has travelled over 150ks with service manager driving and tested ok. Made it home. So all good kind of.

The Toyota version thus far is: the brake pedal operates like a throttle position indicator. It has been fitted back to front from the get go. Ie. from new manufacture ???? Not sure how this is possible as I didn't end up through the window at every stop. So essentially a minor tap would register as a full brake force stop. The fact it was backwards the car would default and operate out of range. Albeit somewhat normally????wtf. This is what I have been told. Don't believe it for one minute.

As a gesture of service for the inconvenience .
All 4 rotors have been machined. Pads inspected
Brake fluid changed and re bled
Not that I wanted a car with rotors machined after 3000kms.

I am awaiting a copy of the workshop repair order of which I will upload to this forum.

They charged me $180 for a tow. To get vehicle to the dealership plus $140 to disconnect /remove my brake controller, and after being reassured this would be refunded, I now face an uphill battle to contest this.

Further my brake controller is now removed and requires re installation.

Am I the ultimate mushroom yet? Kept in the dark and fed on manure.

Has anyone every heard of this ?? or experienced this

Mate has a 2017 with a Tow Pro. No such issues..

Id be contacting REDARC direct and advising them of the issue and ask Toyota for a word by word write up. REDARC have a facility (In SA but Ive heard in most states) where they can take the vehicle for testing.

Where did you connect the Tow Pro (pick up the brake signal) from Ross?

They only require a brake light signal to operate and send power down the blue electric brake line - if you picked it up at the rear tow bar loom I cant see how the tow pro is the cause.

I call bull#$$t on blaming the tow pro (assuming it was installed correctly) but I cant imagine the brake position sensor being backwards either...

I'd want to see the brake sensor and where it fits, I'd be surprised if a position critical part can be fitted backwards. Every removable electrical component I have seen on the Prado has locating points.

Also the brake controller shouldn't be wired into the canbus, it just needs to sense a brake signal.

Whole thing sounds very fishy and like some arse covering.

sounds like Toyota is correct on this one - someone has wired the tow pro direct to the brake pedal , which will definitly upset the Canbus operation . and the inertia sensor inside the tow pro. Any brake controller needs to be wired AFTER the Trailer repeater ECU , which is mounted under the left rear arch panel. The easiest way to get a brake signal is from the towbar wiring plug ( running this wire up to the front )
