  • Front Brake Caliper

    Hi,

Since I have understand that this must be the best forum on the internet I choose to get answers here. I live in Sweden

I was about to change the front brake pads when I changed the tires to winter tires (with spikes), and then I noticed that one of the pistons (don't know if it called that) was stuck, both sides. On the right side I managed to get movin again. But on the left side it is still stuck.

So I then went out on the internet to see if I could get a replace brake caliper.

I then realized that after 2015 the part number is different, end the after market caliper is more or less none.

So my question for you is, what is the difference between these two?
    47750-60350 (2015-)
    47750-60300 (-2015)

Can I use the older one?

    Regards
    Mats "the Swede"

I assume yours is 2015- so you need 47750-60350? I use this site quite a bit for genuine parts, pretty cheap and quick delivery though the freight can be a bit expensive; https://partsouq.com/en/search/all?q=47750-60350
If I'm not in a hurry I'll use these guys https://www.amayama.com/en/part/toyota/4775060350

If the pins are getting stuck, remove it and use emery paper to remove the corrosion. Clean up all surfaces and apply Bendix Ceramasil https://www.bendix.com.au/product-ra...etic-lubricant

        Thanks!

I have used emery paper on the pins and also filed/grined the ends of the pads (removed the paint and abit metal) so they have a bit more space to move in the caliper.
Maybe I will get a complete repair kit.
At the moment it works fine. But I will have my eyes opened. And also my nose if I will smell "heat".

Adding some comments on this issue with brake calipers and stuck pistons.
My 2016 Prado had this exact issue on front left wheel last year, with 75.000km on the meter. At the dealer it cost me 800 USD to get replaced.
Last week I had the car for service at 90.000km Got the info caliper on front right was stuck with one piston. Paid another 900 USD yesterday for this.

My car is driven too little and too "careful", meaning I drive "ECO-friendly" and don't use brake pedal enough. I plan my driving and don't need braking very often. Certainly not hard breaking.
In addition we have a lot of road salt issue here in Sweden for 5-6 months every year. That's also the reason all our frame-built cars rust badly. This also cause brake calipers get stuck if not used enough (my guess)

Lesson learned: Use the braked hard now and then. Make sure they get WARM and exercised... Cost for lost energy or brake pads are nothing compared...

If you are reasonably handy, it’s not a big job to remove the caliper completely, pull it apart, clean and lube everything, reassemble and bleed the brake line. A lot more cost effective than replacing the whole unit. Obviously this does depend on how damaged the pistons are, but normally they should be good for a few hundred thousand.

Hi mate, the reason your calipers are sticking would be the salt causing rust. The distance the pistons move between a soft pedal press and a hard pedal press is negligible so you’d only be unnecessarily causing wear on the rotors and pads by jumping on the pedal, not really “loosening” things up at all.
If you have a lot of rust problems, I’d just be cleaning the calipers on a regular (say every 30000km) basis.
