  • 150 GX Steering Wobble and Brake Issue ongoing- help please

    Hello Everyone,

I am looking for some guidance on an ongoing issue with my 2018 150 GX. I live in Spain and the car was likely an ex highway patrol vehicle, so very well maintained for the high milage. I bought it from a Toyota dealer and it is in v good shape. Warranty does not cover brakes. The car was sold with BRAND new Toyota alloy wheels and tires.

I have owned the car 8 months and soon after buying I noticed a steel wheel wobble, and being a competent mechanical I replaced the discs and pads ( Bosch and quality OEM discs). the shake was gone. Everything was checked and the correct torque settings for bolts inc. wheel nuts was applied. 8k later the wobble returns and I then decided that maybe the discs/pads I had bought were not up to par, so I purchased genuine Toyota parts (discs and pads). While installing theses I noticed some of the caliper piston boots were split so I replaced all the 8 boots and clips with genuine parts. The pistons all extended when the pedal was pressed and I cleaned each piston so it was spotless. Brake fluid was bled from all 4 calipers and brakes have been great. All was good after this.

5K KMs later and a bad front end shake returns. On diagnosis it was a lower wishbone bushing that had gone, so I replaced all 4 and camber bolts with genuine parts. All Ok again after alignment but with v slight high speed wobble on high speed braking.

Over the past 5K miles the wobble is very noticeable at 80 plus KPH. The rear brakes have not been touched during this time and the discs are due to be changed due to a lip on them. Pads are good.

Any suggestions on what I may have here? Did I miss something? Could it be the rear brakes that are misleading me? would rear wrapped discs shake the front and not just the seat of your pants?

If a caliper was bad, surely if would have spotted that during replacement of the boots and cleaning of pistons? The car brakes in a straight line under hard braking.

    Any guidance is much appreciated.

    thank you!!

Are you sure it is brakes? Could it be wheel balance or a tyre out of round? Try swapping them around.

Thanks for your comment. Steering only wobbles once the brakes are pressed otherwise it is completely smooth at all speeds.

        Some more info.
Does it wobble at wheel speed as in a warped disc?
Does it dive left/right when you apply brakes?

Thanks for the comments: it only wobbles when brakes are pressed. I can coast at 120 downhill and it is completely smooth until I lightly touch the brakes. It does not dive on braking. I have cleaned all front pistons to a shine and installed new boots etc. Bled brakes also. I have decided to change rear rotors to brembo (as I have never touched the rear axle) and install new Toyota pads, check caliper actions etc and see if what difference (if any) that makes. The discs DO have a good lip so need to be changed. .. i will post the results.

Is the mating surfaces of the disc rotor to hub flange clean?

What condition are your front shock absorbers in. Could explain the wearing of the bushes. Had a vibration like that in a 2wd Mazda once, found to be the front shocks although that was at low speeds.

Thank you for the responses. I cleaned the surfaces between wheels and hubs with a fine glass paper and all wheel nuts torqued to the same 103 NM. The shocks are quite new and wheel bearings show no sign of wear when off the ground and checked. I have the new rear Brembo discs now and will replace (with Toyota pads) and check caliper piston operation and replaced the boots. if it is the same after that, then maybe I need to get the front rotors checked and machined. .. i can't think what else to look at.

Could it be ABS related. Getting a false reading and applying the brakes to 1 wheel. Can the front sensors be disconnected then take it for a run.

No wheel bearing play? What about steering rack mounting bushes?

                      Thanks for the responses.

To update. I have now changed the rear discs and pads to brembo and Toyota pads and no issue with them, but the issue remains with the wobble on steering above 80Kph.

I have checked the wheel bearings by lifting the wheels and checking for movement and I do not see any or hear anything. The hub flanges were cleaned and the wheel nut torqued correctly.

Steering bushes. I did undo the retaining bolts and (while replacing the inner track ends previously) and looked closely at the bushes. There are NO splits in the bushes but... when moving the steering wheel side to side (with the wheels on the ground and the bolts tight) you can see the rack moving side to side until the bolts stop the movement.

I should add that I have no steering issues, noises, direction control at all to my knowledge. The car is straight as a dye on the road, and maybe the bushes are meant to be soft ?

                      Is this normal?

                      Thanks,

could it be a wheel/tire balance issue. I once had a set of tires that even though they were balanced, they would shake at speeds above 90km/h. I later found out that the installer only balanced them to 80km/h on the machine as the mud tires wouldn't balance properly at speeds higher. I ended up swapping back to A/T and never had an issue afterwards.

In the end I bit the bullet as I couldn't find anything else, and installed new genuine discs and pads (again). This cured the issue completely, so i can only assume that the discs were damaged while braking when the LCA bushing went out on one side... anyway let's hope it stays this way. Thanks for all your comments and happy motoring.

Hey Greenspan did the problem come back?
I have the same problem. I was thinking its play in the steering rack ends as I can feel a little bit of movement in them. Its not super obvious so I don't want to go swapping out parts unnecessarily.

The steering wobble issue is gone completely, but as I have mentioned in the thread I have also replaced the inner track rod ends (don't buy cheap replacements) and the lower control arm bushings (only use Toyota as its a fair job and you don't want to do it again). I have no doubt it was the LCA bushings that caused the discs to warp etc. once they were done and new brake discs installed its as smooth as butter at high speed.

The main symptom I had with the inner track rod ends was a light chattering/clunking felt through the steering wheel when on unpaved roads and speed bumps etc. its just a constant light tap, tap tap (You cannot feel it on smooth roads). To be sure, undue one of your track rods bolts and pop out the arm, and let go of it. If it then drops down and feel all loose, they are stuffed. Good and new ones will not drop as the knuckle will be tight and you will feel resistance.
