  • 150 Clutch replacement. Excedy HD

    Hi all,

Bought a new Excedy HD clutch today $650 (cheap!) wondering if there is a thread or if anyone has experiance replacing the clutch themselves??

Ive done a few clutches over the years but never a 4x4.

Any tips or advice? Box looks very heavy!!

    Cheers

      Sorry, can't help, I haven't replaced mine in my 120 yet(almost done 200000 km).
How many km did you get out of your factory clutch?

But not quite what you were after.

Seperate the transfer case from the gearbox, otherwise it's all the same as most other gearboxes. Not too heavy either, two people make it easy. Make sure you machine the flywheel.

Whitey mines on 75k and its not slipping but it feels ordinary. Adjusted behind the pedal, still ordinary...

Thanks Mike. I saw that. Handy but not quite the step by step guide I was hoping for.

Anywhere to find tensions for bolts? Flywheel to crank, pressure plate to fly wheel etc...??

If you have a windows laptop go on ebay and buy cd workshop manual

Details of all procedures inc torque etc

Cost about $20 and its just a copy of what toyota should use
                Cheers

Yeah mate, along with 1,000 other clutches. I don't remember anything special about the prado box, very similar to the hilux if I recall correctly. I swing spanners for a living, and there is nothing hard about most toyota clutches.

Thanks mate. Bought a transmission holder to fit onto my jack so I can one man it! Ill let you know how it goes.
Fly wheel will get machined. How do you unbolt that?
How do you hold the motor from turning?

Either two people, one on the front of the crank and the other undoing, the other is to use an impact gun. Would still need to hold the crank to properly tension the flywheel bolts for re installation.

I'm about to have a go at this myself for the first time.

Is it best to separate the transfer case first, then remove the gearbox or just take the lot out in one go? I will likely be by myself to complete this.
Also how high do I need to lift the vehicle, can the box remain on jack under the Prado or will I need to get it out completely to make the clutch easier to work on?

                          Cheers
