  • Torque converter lock up kit

    Hello!

I have installed a Richards Auto Electronics Torque Converter lock up kit. It is the greatest mod to the 2018 Prado auto. It works great. The only drawback is that shifting is a little bit rough if you are accelerating. To avoid it I use the S position and lift up the accel when shifting. I have done around 4000 km and I can say fuel consumption has drop down from 1 to 1,5 liters/100 km. The car is much better to drive. I would recommend it.

    Best regards!

    Good to hear.
My biggest gripe is converter slip and trans temps going high.
Considering this kit and keen to hear how it goes in different scenarios.

Have Richards sorted out the issues with their lockup kits causing check engine light due to them making the trans throw an error code? Ive read a lot who have fitted them have this issue. The other brand I've seen is Stockwell or stocklock. Uses the same switching as Toyota so no codes apparently. I know my mate has just removed a Richards and fitted the Stocklock one as he was sick of error codes popping up every other day and needing ECU to be reset to get rid of them.

It seems he has solved it. I have driven around 4000 kms with no issues yet. Hope no problems in the future!

Can confirm not solved.. Mate has one fitted in last couple months and throwing at least 3 codes a day.. He has turned it off now and is looking at another brand to solve it.. Richards said they could stop the codes from displaying by "turning off the codes" in the ECU.. Doesn't sound ideal to me.. Or him, hence he is looking at other options.. Stocklock is the other one he is looking at, reading up on them, some very good reports.

I am not sure what car does Mate have, but in my car there have been no errors at all. I must say I live in Spain, do not know anybody in Richards, and have no conflict of interest.

I can only say about a 2018 Prado.

That link looks like a Wholesale automatics job, very primitive and guaranteed to shoot fault codes.
Stocklock and Richards are around $750 for kit only.
Acquaintance just did a DIY Richards on his 200 series, no fault codes and he's a lead foot. Towed big van from Gladstone to Adelaide no stops so maybe Richards has lifted their game.
                  Can recommend the Stocklock though.
Look at the previous thread, "Stocklock review".

Nope, Richards still throwing fault codes if they dont program them from displaying still. Saw one a few days ago. Owner was pissed off about it..

I still prefer the stocklock as it uses PWM switching over the others which apply full power to the solenoids and can burn them out quicker.

Mate will be mega unhappy if it throws a fault.
He's been for a drive in No2 son's 200 with the Stocklock and it definitely grabs 6th sooner.
Apart from that they seem very similar, Richards slightly clunky on gear changes but that could come down to the driver.
Last time I spoke with Matt he was testing a module to alter the shift points of the 200. It's an add on to the Stocklock kit.
I'm real happy with the kit as is.

It must be with australian models. 30000+km with richards kit in my prado 2018 and no problem. Best mod so far.
