  • Do I have a problem ?

    Hi All,
Took my 2019GXL for a drive around some of the back roads around here with my OBDT dongle hitched up to monitor a few things while driving.
My auto torque converter and pan trans oil temps were quite a bit higher than I would have expected.
95degC to 100degC in the pan and up to 120degC at times for the torque converter on an 18degC day. You might expect those sorts of temps on a 35degC + day when towing or working it hard offroad, but this was on flat bitumen roads and around town !
The vehicle has 4000km on it and I plan to use it offroad in the Vic High Country and do a Simpson Crossing in the future.
Would this be considered normal or does it need looking into ?

What speed do they get converter lock when driving in S?
If driving over rough stuff, corrugations or sand etc often you'll drive for hundreds of miles just under lock up speed.
The trany oil heat build up is phenomenal.
Consider a converter lock up kit so you can lock her without having to drive at insane road speeds.
And look to a trany oil cooler. Can't believe they're still not a factory fitted item by 2019?

Doesn't the AT have a cooler in the radiator any more? My 95 has but I can't help feeling like it's a ticking time bomb to pink milkshake time. And with the engine at operating temp I can't see that it would be doing much cooling anyway!

Yes the trany oil still passes through a heat exchanger in the radiator. It's quite efficient, bottom tank in your 90 normally runs 30 deg C cooler than top tank, so temps around 50-60 deg C.
Converter oil temp can go 120 deg C+ so it needs all the cooling it can get.
The other reason to pass your transmission oil through the heat exchanger is to get your trany oil up to operating temperature faster when the weather is really cold.
The 120's and 150's run a cross flow radiator and it's far more efficient than the 90's conventional job.
But if the petrol 120 and 150 score an extra transmission cooler, can't see why the diesel misses out. Petrol may make more hp but the diesel wins with torque.

carco thanks for the info, that's good to know. Have not done any measurements but I can see how it would build up temperature. Have not (yet, anyway) had the AT oil temp lamp come on so I am guessing it's doing OK, and we have towed up and down the Toowoomba range before no problems. Not sure what the curve is like for the Prado petrol engines, but most petrol engines have a peak HP so far up the rev band you're unlikely to ever use it. As you say the diesel makes a ton more torque.

Interesting you mention getting the trans oil up to temperature. Mine runs like a dog until warm, and then it's pretty brisk. I am guessing this is the oil thinning somewhat and going through the TC easier.

I'm V6 so I've got the little extra 7 o so row cooler up front. I was also suprised by trans temps but the most I have seen is 85-90 (convertor) on a long climb with the convertor unlocked.

It's actually better for trans temp and fuel to just shift it to 4th manually (if auto) as it will use less fuel and the trans temp wont suffer as badly.

'Dan' Yes Auto and V6 also this end. Would shifting to 4th be a huge deal (when towing)? The user guide says turn O/D off when towing, but I am only using 1ton of its 2.5ton towing capacity.

Tuning OD off is towing in 4th.

And they say to do that because the trans gets so hot when doing anything unlocked in 5th.

When the car is cold the trans fluid pressures are higher which is why you can notice it behaving differently. Warm engine oil and trans temps will always get better economy and better shifting behaviours.

1ton is plenty for a Prado givem how gutless the motors are (V6 and Diesel). Tow 1 ton in a ZF equipped territory (SZ on) and see the difference, tow happily in 6th, no temp issues, better economy etc. They just dont go as far off road.

Oil cooler is definitely worth the upgrade. If you decide to install one, make sure the cooler isnt hard mounted to the brackets. Should be mounted through rubber grommets with a sleeve inside to allow for some minimal vibrations like the radiator and aircon condenser are mounted.

Hi. Wiggy, your experience is somewhat normal unfortunately. I found with time I could help temps by varying my driving style and using S mode; but this is quite tedious. As others have noted, adding an oil cooler is really a necessity even if not towing. Kaon has a really good kit and not too hard to self fit; will lower temps by at least 15degree. I would also recommend a Stocklock to manage the torque converter; not only helps with temps but makes car drive better. This is tricky to self install but with care doable; and there is a new Stocklock model just out for the 200s; not sure it is ready for the 150 yet. And I think others have found the ATF warning light is set at about 150degree; so if that light comes on it is almost too late. Gerry

Rather than stocklock you can go for a Raptor tune, for petrol, that adds some much neded torque and alters the locking behaviour as well. Self fit of this is very easy and is quite easy to undo if ever needed.

I’d still vote for an oil cooler.
i have the raptor tune in my V6 which makes gear changes much better, and locks a lot easier/more quickly, but around town at 40kmh it is still slipping a lot and generating heat.

I just Keep an eye on temps in town and adjust driving accordingly..
