I since reinstalled the booster diode fuse back in the car and now the charging volts are now at least back up into the 14v bracket again.... Interesting.....

Not surprising, theafter market unit was probably a standard alternator, not the
      OEM high compensation type.

        • The voltage would give you a good indication, if the non OEM was always sitting around the 14.2V to 14.4V then it would have had a standard regulator in the alternator.

From a visual perspective they would look similar, the genuine Toyota one will have a one way clutch pulley, the non OEM may not, I would imagine the genuine one would also have Nippondenso on it.

          • This is the one they put in my 120. (includes clutch pulley)
Leigh, I think you made same comment about higher voltage when I initially posted my new alternator...
I keep watching the voltage on the new one but so far no need to put the diode back in.

            • Hey Steve....

That's the same one the that Auto Elect installed on mine..... apparently they fit all Toyota D4D models since '06 w/o any issues.... Interesting to see them being a 130A. What is the CURRENT OUTPUT of the Toyota OEM ALT's ??

                  • It will probably be a Chinese unit then, hopefully you'll get a better run
out of yours than others have.

                    • Rob_maca67: Australian/Standard output is about 80amps, but toyota list both a 100 and a 130 for other countries (they do pre heaters and extra batteries for the snow and ice countries also, so extra current demand).
I think they list them in VAC not amps so it wound depend on the voltage as to exactly how many amps.... Leigh would know more about this...
Leigh: If I get more than 120K out of the new (Chinese) one, then I'll be ahead of the toyota OEM. :-)

                      steady at 14.2V warm.

                      • Some of the Chinese units have failed well before then, really I would expect an alternator to last at least a 200000Km's assuming it hasn't taken a bath in mud etc.

At that sort of KM's I would pull it down and check the bearings and change the brushes etc and with the newer ones check the clutch.

If a lot start failing around the 100000KM's mark one would have to assume the manufacture has dropped his quality control.

If my alternator failed I personally would rebuild my unit if possible else go for a Bosch unit or maybe try one of the American units, I would steer clear of the Chinese ones unless you can find one with a good track record.

                        • Leigh....

Years ago I use to take my car to a Auto Elect that use to "Re-wind/Re-Wire" ( i think that's what he called it) and by simply doing that he use to get more out of it + it would start charging a bit over idle..... It's a LONG time ago but it had something to do from changing it from a "Delta" winding to a "Star" winding or visa versa....

Have u heard of anything like this or was he playing with me ??

                          • Hi Rob and no the auto electrician was not pulling your chain.

I use to be a partner in an auto electrical service business and while we did not rewind alternators, we could get them done.

Few auto electricians did this work but some did and I would not be to surprised if you could still find one that did but it’s just cheaper these days to buy a bigger alternator.

But as is being discussed here and now, knowing what is a good alternator verses rubbish is the million dollar question ( well a few hundred dollars any way )

While on the subject of a new alternator for a Toyota. My wife's Toyota Seca needs the alternator replaced but there are so many different models, where do you get the info to be able to pickup the correct alternator for a Toyota?

                              • Sorry Tim.... Can't really help there as I left it up to the Auto Elect in Mossman to source an ALT for me. He said he usually keeps the one he sold me on the self because it suits a wide range of D4D Toyotas from '06 onwards....

Leigh's post is probably on the money.....
