  • Will the alternator charge my second battery with a dual battery set-up???

    Hi all

I have seen the light and have just ordered a new GXL Prado for the mrs.

Went into TJM to order a few goodies and the salesman said that the 150's alternator does not have enough balls to charge a second battery and that I need some computer chip to confuse it so it will?

    Is this true?

No, it's not true. The booster diode will increase the battery charging voltage but the alternator does have the guts to charge two batteries as standard. I think the European Prado comes with two batteries and the same alternator as standard kit.

Hi Warnsie, there’s lots of myths and misunderstandings about the low operating voltage of many of the new vehicles, not just Toyotas.

But Toyotas have a simple workaround in the Alternator Voltage Booster, which was designed in Australia and the original product is available from the Australian manufacturer at the link below.

Warnsie, I have no connection with this manufacturer but I am a staunch supporter of Australian developed and manufactured products and this is one.

My mate here, is a Auto Elec, reckons those diodes are a waste. Is there any evidence, output figures off the alternator, before and after??
I used to be apathetic, now I just dont care !

I've measured both before and after values and find I get 0.5 - 0.6 volts higher output from the alternator when using the diode.

Yes, they do actually work! It's proof enough for me.

I too like VXWesty have experienced similar increases in charging voltages. Usually get 14+ on a cold start and when engine is warm getting 13.8 or 13.9. I have monitored mine before the replacement fuse was installed and this is an increase of around 0.6v for me.

I have the booster from Derek at ABR Sidewinder.

I have the Australian made one from ebay, same experience as above.

My neighbour is a retired Auto Elec, he had a look at mine and bought one too

                  Well worth the $35

Yep as they claim the diode will up the voltage to by about 0.5 volt, which means mine sits at around 13.9 - 14.0volt once warm. 40,000km including a number of extended touring trips (up to 8 weeks) running 2 fridge / freezers inverter lights etc etc and no problems. $35 well spent.

I have the original made by LeighW

                    Cheers Andrew

I have the same experience as the others, about +.6v. Have done lots of trips with fridge including currently and works great.

I made up my own by purchasing a 10 amp diode, cut the fuse holder open, soldered the fuse in line with the fuse, a bit of 5 minute epoxy and fitted it to the car. I now get 14.1v. If you plug it into the fuse the wrong way round you get a low voltage from your regulator so there is no danager of damaging anything.

I have been running this mod from the day the car came home and I now have 90,000 on the 150. I have dual batteries and a third battery in the trailer and have had no problems.

From memory it cost me about a buck.

Is it true that the Redarc Smart Start BCDC will put out a higher charge then the alternator will? Mr TJM seems to believe this is the case.

                              Hi Nifty,

Good to see you've made your own but keep in mind you have now removed
the protection that the fuse provided. If a fault should develop in the vehicles
wiring or alternator you could end up with a wiring or fuse box fire and lose of
                              your vehicle.

I strong recommend that you incorporate a fuse into your design.

                              Cheers
