  • Satnav question-disconnecting speed sensor?

Hello all, I have searched but failed to find an answer to this question:
Has anyone found a hack to allow the satnav in the 150 (I have the altitude) to be used when the car is moving?
I mean entering addresses and using the phone menu etc.

    Thanks in advance,
    Cameron.

I'm feeling your pain here too. Previous car I had let you use the dial pad on the phone function on the screen at least.

I always thought if the car could sense a passenger in the front seat, then at least let the system recognise that so they can enter an address. Hope someone can help too cafiem

Its a safety feature cafiem but on the chinese aftermarket units you are able to earth the handbrake wire and trick the unit into thinking the handbrake is always on and therefor the car is not moving. It works on my digoptions unit...

Perhaps the genuine unit has the same handbrake trigger?, if you can find it in the loom its worth a look...
        Cheers

technically it would be illegal here, as is almost everything anyway. You'd have to find out which wire goes to the handbrake and earth that via a toggle switch if that's how it works. If it's anything like the Mitsubishi ones, they actually go off the SatNav itself and as soon as you are moving more than 3kph it stops you using it. There is a mod the Ralliart guys use that you can disconnect the satnav's GPS via a toggle switch so it thinks you are note moving. Lets you input stuff that way. May have to do it that way. ??

Found these for the Toyota ones

The "top4runner" link below shows a wire that is the typical VSS wire (no idea if this is correct or not). I would pull the nav unit out and disconnect this wire from the plug, just to see if that does what you are seeking of if the Toyota ones are setup like the mitsubishi one above.

It is actually fairly easy to remove individual wires from these toyota plugs. You need to disengage the securing tab (rectangle bit across the top of the plug on the outside) then just use a small sewing needle pushed into either the front or rear (depending on plug) top of the wire hole in the plug to disengage the locking pin then apply firm pulling pressure to the wire (but dont rip it out). The whole pin should pop out of the plug, hopefully without damaging it. You can then insulate the wire and put it all back in to see if it works or not, if it doesn't it's simply a matter of returning the wire to the plug to restore to normal.

I haven't looked at this myself in the 150 as I have a 120, the issue though is is the screen disabled by the handbrake, a signal from the engine management or transmission ie vehicle speed or possibly by the GPS in the radio itself?

A lot of after market units have a hidden setting that allows this to be disabled but don't know about the Toyota unit.

Another aspect to consider is the Navigation software may use the speed signal in times when the GPS is unavailable, ie dropouts due to trees ravines tunnels etc.

As I don't have a service manual for the current 150 can't look this info up, but if someone does or can supply hopefully may not be to hard to find a way around this issue depending on how smart mister Toyota have been.

                  Cheers

Just had a look at the wiring diagram for the nav unit. Couldn't find the VSS wire as referenced above (doesn't mean it's not there, I just couldn't find it) but the factory nav module does indeed have a parkbrake switch that goes to ground (light green wire on pin 17 of the display/nav module). I would try this one first.

                      Hi RWO,

where did you find the wiring diagram? I have GX with the upgraded 6 stacker Toyota unit, which has no satnav. Im hoping to find a VSS / handbrake wire as this disability gives me the sh*ts.

                      thanks.

                        Thanks everyone.
The handbrake fix is overridden when the car moves. I'm not sure about an internal GPS? The unit seems to use speeds you input in the menu to give arrival time etc.
