  • Upgrade GXL headlight bulbs

Hi, I have a 2010 GXL and would like to upgrade the bulbs in the headlights to something a bit brighter/better without having to change the headlight body as such. What's the best option that people are going for ? Any ideas would be great cheers

The globe style is H11. I changed mine to Philips 30 plus, which is 30% more light.

Don't know if other globe styles will work. I was in a Repco store yesterday, and the high output globes were not there in the H11 style. Might be something if you use google.

A lot of people are swapping over to a higher output halogen bulb. These bulbs keep the same wattage so there is no extra load on the system. You also have the option of "whiter" light halogen bulbs. Keep in mind with these bulbs it's aesthetics first, output second. The super super super white/blue bulbs actually have less output than standard.

I'm not really sure what bulbs are used in the 150, so I'm just going to show you the H4 bulb used in the 90 and the 120. Brand and Light output is the same... just a different shape... maybe.

The bulbs are often rated as +60 or +100 so on and so forth. The higher the number, the higher the percentage of supposed light output.

From Narva - Available from virtually every autopart store around.

From Philips - Available from most autopart stores. Standard stock in Autobarn and Repco
I personally use these guys. They are 130+

      But you also have...
      +30, +50 and +100.

Also available is the line-up from Osram
      Night Breaker Unlimited 110+
      Silverstar 2.0 60+

      Hope this helps!

Don't be fooled by the "equivalent to 135w" or similar claim. They are referring to the colour of the light (in deg K), NOT the light output (in Lumens). Also, any colour filter on the bulb will result in less light output even though the light output may be a whiter light.

I previously had Osram Night Breakers in and now have Philips bulbs. I would have the Osram bulbs anyway over the Philips. Seemed to put out a lot more light. As soon as the Philips cark it I'll be going back.

I too prefer the osram night breakers over the philips extreme visions. Keep an eye out for the amount of blue filter on the bulb. As Starbuck above says, more blue makes for a whiter light, but flipside is it reduces range and output.

Try driving at night in the rain with a bulb featuring 'maximum legal blue'...like having keyring torches for headlights.

Ebay is the best price I have found. Start at about $45 for a pair.

Any one have any before and after evidence that these bulbs are better than factory. I find most third party bulbs to be the same, or worse and fail within the first 12 months.

                        Cheers.

I did a quick comparison on the garage, 1 Night Breaker and 1 OEM. Did appear to be considerably brighter. Also pulled up next to another 150 (presumably standard) in an undercover carpark and I was quite impressed with how much brighter my Night Breakers were.

Hey Symo. I took before and after shots of when I rewired my 90 but I also rewired them directly from the battery through relays and picked up a further 2 volts at the lights for extra power. So it's hard to determine from that how much extra the bulbs really added as I went from 10.4Volts up to 12.2Volts at the bulbs... 20% power increase.

I was also using Philips 130s

I wonder about the recent interest in bluish light for driving. It is well documented that blue is one of the worst colours (frequencies) for the human eye to focus especially at night when the pupils are at maximum dilation. Humans have evolved with eyes most sensitive to yellow/green - which is why blue light is sometimes linked to eyestrain and fatigue if used for long periods. Has anyone found they enjoy using lights which produce light near the blue end of the spectrum?
