  • Side Mirror issues, does not stop at home position

    Hi all,

This may have already been covered and I am sorry if it has for not searching enough. I am writing on behalf of my father in law who has just brought a 150 series Prado GXL.

Unfortunately the guy he bought it off failed to tell him about an issue with his side mirror and now the money is handed over it is not his problem anymore.

Basically when they start the car and the windows automatically open up, I believe its his passenger side mirror which opens but instead of stopping at its home position it keeps travelling past until facing completely outwards.

They have drove the car back to Mackay now so I cant really do anything for them to fix it until they return for Christmas but do any of you guys no where to access the plug to disconnect power to the mirror so it isn't a nuisance for them as every time they start the car they have to climb across the seats to pull it back.

Also do any of you know what causes it? It sounds like a 'stopper' or limit switch in the side mirror which could be broken?

    Thanks guys
    Scott

The GXL mirrors do not fold with ignition as standard it sounds like a after market mod has been done.

Thanks for that, if its aftermarket or OEM I don't mind I just would like to know where the plugs etc are for each mirror so I can isolate the supply to them to stop them over-travelling. It happens on start-up and in general use when you trigger the movement so there must be an issue with a limit being broken etc.

No aftermarket mod has been done. This happens when the mirror has beef forced to fold forward and it breaks something inside the unit. I had somebody do this to mine about a month ago in a shopping centre carpark and came back to find it completely folded forward. Since then every time i start the car it folds totally forward again and i have to push it back into place. I spoke to Toyota and they said the mirrors aren't designed to fold forward and something has broken inside, however there is no fix, have to buy new. For me, as mine is a Kakadu, its $2500!!

        cheers
        Geoff

Same problem here - mirror got forced back in te wrong direction.
So now everytime I start up, I wind down the window and move the mirror back to the correct position.

Yes indeed. Hit mine on a concrete post in a carpark and now the same thing, it folds right forward. You will never mend this. It needs a new mirror assembly. Plenty available on eBay. I dismantled mine completely and the problem is a bent detent under the gearbox under the big spring next to the motor. You virtually have to destroy the thing to get to it. Get a new one. Careful. Make sure yours has the right combination of variables. Left or right. Fold or not. Turn indicator or not. Heated or not. 5 or 7 wires. Colour. If the colour is wrong you can transfer the back casing from your old one, unless damaged. Around $200. Thousands if you take to a dealer! Have fun getting the door trim back in place. Just requires patience!

There is no position sensor, so the car computer has no idea where the mirrors are. When you start the car it activates the motors to drive the mirrors outwards. When the mirror reaches the correct driving position detent and locks in, or if it is already there, the motor is unable to drive it further and stalls. The computer sees the higher current drawn by the motor and stops it. If you damage the detent so that the mirror never locks properly in the driving position, the motor is able to continue to drive it all the way forward. It took a while to work this one out!

Hi, It's been a little while since I have been in here but thought I would share my experience with this problem.

Like the above I damaged a folding mirror on my 2013 Kakadu and it kept folding all the way out. Rather than pay the $1500+ Toyota wanted for the unit, I lived with the motor unplugged and the mirror just jammed in position for some time.

Recently I opened it up and found the problem to be similar to what others described and eventually found this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3296...511f4c4dvJFUF6 . All up it took me about 2 hours to fit and it works like a charm. Total repair cost: about $60 including shipping and currency change.

Once I worked out how to dismantle the mirror it actually wasn't too hard a fix, the most tedious part was the wiring harness. It threads through the motor assembly that I needed to replace and I couldn't work out how to get the wires with terminals through the hole. Maybe there is an easier way but I ended up snipping all the wires close to the main plug and rejoining them after I threaded it through the new part. One gotcha was two wires looked like they had similar markings. Maybe they are the same but I marked them myself anyway.

                    Interesting.

can I ask where you can unplug the mirror?

You need to remove the door skin to get to the plug...

Not the door skin, just loosen the inside trim. I only had to undo the screws holding and open the top corner near the mirror and I could get to the plug pretty easily. This shows where the screws are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7Eoo6i0re0

I bought the motor off AliExpress for about $40 installed it yesterday works a treat. Hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new mirror assembly.

Just saw your posts, I'm not as active here as I used to be. Glad it worked for you. Given that it isn't actually that hard to fit I feel it's pretty poor form from Toyota to try and make you pay such a large amount for this type of fix.
