  • Battery charging query

Our prado & subaru will be sitting in the carport unused for 10 weeks while we travel oseas.
Prado has dual battery setup - cranking battery & AGM auxiliary connected via Redarc DCDC unit.
Subaru has a single cranking battery.
I have a single 20A Projecta battery charger and a couple of sets of jumper leads.
Assuming all 3 batteries are in good health & fully charged to begin with can i maintain them as follows.
    - connect battery charger to Prado cranking battery
    - one set of jumper leads from Prado crank bat to Subaru
    - disconnect aux AGM batt and connect to crank batt with 2nd set of jumper leads. Note that i asked Redarc tech support if the DCDC unit would keep aux charged in this situation and they advised against it. They gave reasons that i didn't understand.

I figure the subaru side will be fine but i recalling reading somewhere that charging different battery types hooked up in parallel is not a good idea. I don't want to wreck the AGM.
    Would appeciate yr advice.
    thnx. Frank

Just charge all the batteries before you leave and again when you come back.

...as simple as that. I thought the cranking batteries would fall to unaccetable levels over that period of time.

I've had my car stored for 3 months and not had an issue just by charging before and after. The after charge is important to restore the battery to full capacity. You are right in that the batteries will lose some capacity while not charged. Check the water level in the flooded battery after charging when you come back. It may consume a little water if charged after being discharged a bit.

Hi Frank, I'm not up with the technical side of charging different battery types together, however, I think there are a couple of things worth checking. Your battery will probably be fine while you are away (depending on the condition of the battery), but you need to see if there will be any power drain from any electronics in the car (especially any add-ons like alarms etc) and the rate of power being consumed. I had a boat for many years and learn't pretty quick the importance of keeping an adequate charge in a cranking battery otherwise the life of the battery may be reduced. These days if my Car or Bike are sitting for a period I use a small trickle charger on each battery. Doing this is supposed to max the life of the battery as cranking batteries are not usually deep cycle and won't cope as well being partially discharged over a period of time (for the car I use ctek smart charger I think its about 5 amp max).

For 10 weeks i would just charge them fully, and disconnect them to eliminate any parasitic drain. Then when you return just recharge, reconnect and punch in your radio codes.

I regularly leave my Prado for 6-7 months with the battery disconnected and simply charge it up again before use. There is nothing to worry about that the electronics will forget that they are in a car and not a toaster. However my wife has an Audi A3 which does cause issues if the battery is off for a long period so I use a so called "smart charger" and leave this permanently connected. Both vehicles are fine after using this procedure for several years.

Agree, fully charge them all and then disconnect.
10-weeks is not long, I have machines that aren't kicked over for 6-8 months and they all fire up straight away.
Disconnecting from parasitic drain is the go. All my stuff has a master key at each battery.

Disconnect the earth/negative terminals to eliminate draw, as others have stated above recharge on your return should be AOK.

If you want something more quantitative:

A flooded car battery discharge rate is about 1% per day at room temperature, 0.25% per day at 10 °C (50 °F) and 1.5% per day at 30 °C (86 °F). This self discharge percentage is the percentage of the remaining capacity, so a flooded lead acid battery will still have 50% of its capacity remaining after 6 months. Low-maintenance and sealed batteries have lower discharge rates of less that 0.5% per day and calcium-lead batteries can have a self discharge of less than 2% per month.

Best to avoid discharging a normal car battery more than 50% (~ 12.3 V), so no worries.
