  • Cruise control issues

My 2011 Prado diesel auto cruise control has started to play up. When I start the Prado I can turn cruise control on and green dash light comes on. As I drive I can set speed to 60 but after about 10 minutes the cruise control light goes out and I cant set speed any more. When I stop Prado and turn ignition off and back on again I can turn cruise control on again but it only lasts for about 10 mins of driving before it goes out again. An electrician has checked all the inputs and believes its an ECU problem. He has said its a 2 week turn around to have it checked and possibly reprogrammed or a new one if its not repairable. Any one on this forum have similar issues? I'm located in SE Melbourne and would like some recommendations for a second opinion.

Does it go off when turning a corner? And usually in the same direction? If so, likely clock spring.

Thanks JMO70 and Piggy. Have read all the clock spring posts and it does not happen while turning corner or moving steering wheel while stationary. I took it to a Toyota dealer and the head mechanic plugged his computer into my Prado and came for a drive with me. It took 45 minutes of driving all over different road surfaces before I could replicate fault. I left the Prado with him all day. He checked all connections and could replicate problem but no issues / codes were showing up on his computer. His computer was saying that my cruise control was on but my light was out and I could not engage it. He was stumped and said that he would need the car for a few days to try and work out what was causing this issue. Will up date later with what was discovered???

            Hi jbodey,

I was meant to write up the whole saga and forgot about it. It took about 3 months to finally sort out. My mechanic could not find any codes or issues and suggested I see an auto electrician. He had the car for three days and also could not find anything but suggested I should have the automatic transmission looked at. I took car to automatic transmission specialist. His electronic equipment could not find any error codes but we agreed to service the transmission and check oil condition and valves. No issues were found and oil was still in great condition with no foreign matter found in oil. He also pointed to an electrical problem as Prado drove well through all gears in manual mode. I bit the bullet and took it to a Toyota dealer. They had the car for one week and also could not find anything but suggested it may be the ECU but no guarantees. They wanted $1800 to supply fit and re program unit. I asked if they would take unit back if that did not fix the problem and they said no. I had words with the manager about this and he also reiterated that there were no guarantees. I asked if I sourced my own ECU would they fit it and he agreed . I sourced an original Toyota ECU from Japan for $800 Australian dollars delivered . The dealership fitted the unit and re programmed it with latest firm ware. The issue was still there. I once again had a long meeting with the service manager and basically said that their service and knowledge was not good enough. He said he would pass this issue on to head office technicians and get back in touch with me. A week later he rang to say that globally there were no problems like the one I was having and there was no data to help resolve the issue. We had further robust discussions and I demanded a senior technician to work with a senior mechanic to resole this issue or I would be going to consumer affairs and ACCC. Some two weeks later I received a call from Toyota saying a head technician would be available next week and If I could leave the Prado with them for at least one week. After three days Toyota rang to say they think they have found the issue and asked to test drive Prado over next few days to make sure.

After all this it was the Throttle control module. Hope this helps
