  • Fog Light Help

Silly question of the day time. Apologies if its been covered.

I am looking at installing flood lights in place of the factory fog lights however my concern is that the new lights will draw to much power for the factory canbus loom. (2018 GXL)
I want them to run off the factory fog light activation in the cab.
Would anyone know what the maximum draw would be? Is this even a concern at all?

Also any reasons not to would be appreciated. ie legalities

I am looking at installing these: https://www.stedi.com.au/c-4-flush-m...ght-flood.html

Go easy please, I know lots about lots however I don't know much about electrical.

    Thanks Lads.

I don't know the current draw of the OEM fog lights but I would think it would be minimal, probably less than the 2.1 amps the Stedi lights will draw. Not sure if the output is listed in the owners manual but it should be possible to connect a amp meter to measure it.
My main concern with fitting a flood light in place of a fog light is that the beam pattern will have no cutoff to prevent dazzling/blinding on coming drivers and they could/would be on with low beam. They would also be worse than useless in fog. While you may not use them driving on road I would think technically they would be illegal, I suspect the same style of lights are fitted to a lot of HSV & FPV cars I get dazzled by.
What is your goal here, more light on road or off road?

Thanks Lee. The plan was to have more off-road light and a better light for on-road inclemet weather. What you have suggested about the lights being useless in fog is something I suspected however was not sure about. I don't want to lose an accessory just to gain another.
I might chalk it up as a bad idea and move onto the next mod. Thanks for your time mate.

I have been thinking of adding a light bar to the complement the driving lights I currently have fitted using the existing loom but with a separate switch. I have run an additional wire from under the dash adjacent to the driving light switch through to the engine bay. My thoughts are to parallel the existing lights and switch the light bar relay earth circuit through an dash switch in series with the existing loom switch. As I am running Narva enhanced optic lights which draw less than 6 amps an additional light bar will not overload the circuit.
The Narvas work well enough for most of my driving so only want the light bar for off road work.
