    Hey guys,

    2014 GXL D4D stock Prado

I bought a caravan, rewired it from 240v to 12v and added an Intervolt DCDC + battery system to it. All great.

In the meantime I took the Prado to the local auto electrician to get an Anderson plug put on the back bumper to charge the caravan while I drive. Great ratings online. I also asked for an isolator, as a failsafe to make sure I couldn’t drain the main battery when stationary and car not running (I didn’t know at the time the Intervolt already does it).

The auto elec ( older sole trader guy, no apprentices) installs the isolator on top of the engine bay fuse box lid, and taps screws into 3 relays!

Now at the time, I was in a rush and didn’t check the work. I paid and left. But later, I noticed lots of electric problems - headlights stopped working etc.

I had a look, couldn’t believe it. Called and took it back, he replaced the 3 dead relays and changed out the screws to cable ties. He didn’t apologise.

    My questions are this:

    1. There is ample room on the engine wall, why install on the lid of the fuse box? It’s a pain in the arse to get the fuse box lid off now.
    2. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much of a dumbass job is this?
    3. Even though he repaired without charge ($100 worth of relays retail), but he didn’t apologise or admit fault, should I name and shame?

I have a couple of new jobs I’d like done, such as adding a Steinbeauer chip and can’t consider him again after this, or am I being crazy?

i wouldnt be going back to him - a proper bloke would have known about the intervolt in the first place. Did he install fuses into the caravan circuit before the isolator ?

as much as i enjoy a good name and shame i dont know if site rules allow for it.

      1. Because he is lazy (as well as a drongo).
      2. -5
      3. Absolutely name and shame. Just think of the grief you'll be saving someone else.

Nothing should be secured with cable ties unless they are stainless steel ties. The heat under the bonnet makes them brittle after a while.
