    My horn stopped working and after a bit of trouble shooting found that the clock spring had failed. After pricing the genuine one at $900, I looked at ebay and found a number there priced from $28-$450. Depending on whether they were genuine or not and whether they had the steering sensor on them. Figured I could order the cheap one and if it didnt work then it wasn't much lost. On getting one that was supposed to fit my car, on arrival I found that I needed the steering sensor to be on it. On pulling the original out I saw that it had a warning on the sensor "Do not remove sensor from clock spring". So as I couldnt see why it wouldnt work as it appeared that the sensor had its own plug, I removed it from the original clock spring and fitted it to the replacement. Fitted everything, and everything appeared to work. It wasnt until I started moving the vehicle that the steering sensor and traction control alarms initiated.

    After further investigation it would appear to me that the sensor has its positioning sensor built into the plastic part that locks to the clock spring, and whilst on the surface it appears not to make a difference whether the locating ring is at 0 degrees or 360 degrees, that in fact the sensor can read a number of turns of the positioning ring? Is this why the warning is there on the sensor? Hence why I still have the alarms up as I may have turned the ring a number of times whilst playing with it before reassembly thinking it didnt matter (and yes the clock spring is located in its centre point).

    So my first question here is, if I can get the positioning ring in the right spot to mesh with the clock spring assembly, will the alarms clear, or do they need to be cleared with a diagnostic tool? Or are the two parts a mated system and thus the sensor cannot be meshed with another clock spring?

    Another question is, what diagnostic tools do people use on a Prado 150 2012 GLX? I have been looking at Autel Maxicom MK808, MK808TS, MS906. Anyone here have experience with them and have any recommendations? I will probably need steering positioning angle, steering reset, ABS reset after brake bleeding. Alternator checking?

    Sorry but here's the bad news. Just went through the same process for the same reason and accidentally dropped the steering position sensor whilst I was changing it over. Installed it incorrectly and that's it, fried. Really stupid design, with no apparent reason that it can't be soft reset. So Techstream, which I have, doesn't work. It can be reset by pulling the sensor apart and bridging some pins, there is a video from some Russian guy showing how to do it.

      So if the sensor isnt at the correct position when installed, it kills it, or makes it unusable unless reset somehow?

      So solution is a new clockspring and sensor already assembled?
