hi all, I have a 2016 2.8 gxl and am wondering if anyone can tell which alternator is in the car. Fixed, temp compensating or variable voltage? Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
Based on a few spot measurements I've taken, I believe the alternator is just a temperature compensated unit, same as the earlier 150 and 120 series alternator.

The alternator in the 2.8ltr model is a strange setup, it is an ECU controlled alternator but doesn't have a current monitor on the
battery. It acts the same as the previuos temperature, alternators. Seems Toyota decided to put an ECU controlled unit in but
not the software or current sensor for smart charge functions, no doubt they will at some point. It does though generate
error codes which can be read by ODB reader etc.
Biggest draw back with the system is you can't turn off the low charge voltage like you can with some of the other makes smart
charge systems and you can't use a booster diode to improve the charge voltage as it doesn't have external voltage sensing.
