  • DCDC charger

Without attempting to reopen the the DCDC v. VSR wars, I have a question. I have a 2016 2.8 diesel with the low charging alternator- around 13.4 v. I have a kickass vsr charging the 2nd [deep cycle] battery. For the last 5 years that I have been using this system I have suspected that the 2nd battery [105 amps] never gets fully charged. In general terms might this be correct? If it is true will a DCDC charger put in the last bit of charge albeit a bit more slowly.
As a follow up as I consider changing to a DCDC charger with solar input, there appears to be a range of prices from about $300 to $600 with Redarc towards the top end and more importantly 20, 25, 30, 40 amps. Is bigger better or are there other issues? Additional information is that there is a cable from the second battery to the rear of the car to run the fridge AND to the anderson plug for the camper which has an old Matson 20 amp DCDC charger for the battery back there. This part of the system appears to work well.
Thoughts, as I said without reopening the culture war? Information and not emotion please.

The charging voltage from my alternator to the cranking battery is lower than the max charging voltage from my BCDC to the auxiliary battery. However the charging profile of the BCDC is complex. Plus the BCDC keeps charging the Aux battery after ignition-off - for too long in my view.

The setup I have is showing that with a fridge running, and the vehicle parked overnight and most of the next day, the cranking battery is drained below the cutoff threshold in the specs for the BCDC. So I'm considering either a VSR or manually isolating the two batteries when parked on trips or not is use long term.

If you have gotten 5 years out of the battery so far and it is still good why do you need to change anything, just give it a periodic charge with a charger to bring it up t full if you believe it isn't getting there?

Leigh both batteries are 2 years old. In general terms then dcdc offers no real advantages over car then on the 2.8 motor?
