Without attempting to reopen the the DCDC v. VSR wars, I have a question. I have a 2016 2.8 diesel with the low charging alternator- around 13.4 v. I have a kickass vsr charging the 2nd [deep cycle] battery. For the last 5 years that I have been using this system I have suspected that the 2nd battery [105 amps] never gets fully charged. In general terms might this be correct? If it is true will a DCDC charger put in the last bit of charge albeit a bit more slowly.
As a follow up as I consider changing to a DCDC charger with solar input, there appears to be a range of prices from about $300 to $600 with Redarc towards the top end and more importantly 20, 25, 30, 40 amps. Is bigger better or are there other issues? Additional information is that there is a cable from the second battery to the rear of the car to run the fridge AND to the anderson plug for the camper which has an old Matson 20 amp DCDC charger for the battery back there. This part of the system appears to work well.
Thoughts, as I said without reopening the culture war? Information and not emotion please.
