  • Horn not working - 2010 VX

    Hi

The horn on my 2010 VX has stopped working after working intermittently a few times.

The fuse is ok. The mechanic assumes it’s the clockspring. But would I see other faults if that was true?

Before I try and power up the horn to test is there a way to set the Car alarm off assuming the horn would signal?

    Any tips.

    thank you

You could try testing the clock spring by leaning on the horn while turning the steering wheel.

Thank you, no sound when steering wheel is turned in either direction. Do you think given that it could be something else?

Do your steering wheel controls still work - audio, cruise control?

Yes all the controls still work (audio, cruise, display options) with no faults. Just the horn doesn't sound.

I should add, I hit a roo once and it did front end damage, so Im wondering if somethings gone a miss from that even though it did work. Or I had to replace the telescopic control in the steering column a few years ago so maybe its possible something is a miss in the column/wheel?

Possibly the horn unit itself. Disconnect it and apply power to the terminals. Start troubleshooting the easy things first.

Perfect, that’s what I was thinking will keep going & hold off ordering a clockspring.

It will almost certainly be the clock spring based on the age of vehicle and symptoms. A non-genuine clock spring only costs around $50 on ebay, just be sure to get the right model. Alternatively go to anayama, megazip or carmarka to get a genuine part for a fraction of the cost.

Be super careful to follow the correct process for removal and installation. It's really simple and easy provided you are methodical, from memory there should be some online guides or videos.

Ok I wasn’t sure with all the other functions still working. Given that it’s a VX I think they are about $400-500. I was going to purchase and hand over to the mechanic
but will check the horns over the weekend first.

krypto is correct, it's a sure thing to be the clock spring. I bought one off Ebay with genuine Toyota markings for about $300 as opposed to $900 from the dealer. Then I got the dealer to install for $100. I figured for $100 it was a bargain for them to do it. Was about two years ago now & no troubles since.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone that replied. After testing the fuse, relay & horns, it was the clockspring. I ordered one on ebay and had my local mechanic install it, he made it look easy and it was done in about ten minutes!

It's been a very long time but i want to say, from what you've described, it does seem like the clockspring could be the culprit, but it's hard to say for sure without further testing. Sometimes other faults might accompany a clockspring issue, but not always.
Before diving into testing the horn, you could try triggering the car alarm to see if the horn responds. As for setting off the alarm, perhaps giving the Ryobi air horn a try could be a handy alternative method. It might provide a clue about whether the horn itself is functional or not.
