  • No sound from audio system intermittently

Starting a few months ago, the sound from the audio system stopped working occasionally. No sound from audio player, navigation system, or beeps from touch screen or buttons.

When you turn on the vehicle, the sound will either work immediately and continue to work until the vehicle is turned off, or not work and stay not working until it is turned off. There has never been a case of it starting to work or not work during a trip. And before today, it hadn't worked at all for about 2 weeks, which had me thinking it was now permanently broken. Of course when I was about to book it into Toyota, it started working again this morning.

Some Googling provided information on diagnostics menus so I've just run them today. Perhaps unfortunately, the audio insists on working today, however I have conflicting reports from two different screens which is quite strange. Entering via the <APPS> button & 3 headlights shows DSP-AMP failure, whilst entering via the <AUDIO> button shows DSP-AMP OK.

A quick check under the driver's seat, which I believe is where the amp is located, doesn't suggest any wiring/plug issue.

Anyone got any suggestions? I wouldn't mind betting that it'll refuse to fail if I take it into Toyota...

Mine has just started doing this.

about 3 or so weeks ago during the cold snap I was down in NSW and the gps receiver stopped being detected. It sorted itself out eventually.

Now, exact same sound issue. Techstream pulled an audio system code. Short detected on speaker.
Going to pull the system this weekend and test the speaker resistance

      Edit:
Looks to be exact same issue, I'm out of warranty but If its something more tan the head unit I will be pushing ACL warranty. First the dpf shit now this.
I signed up to the DPF class action as soon as I could.
If its just the headunit then I think I would rather replace it with something better as if Toyota fix it then it will still be the same crap Toyota unit with no carplay, outdated maps and crap handsfree.

Can you please give me an update if you take it to Toyota

I also signed up for the DPF class action.

I might go into the dealership here tomorrow and see what they say about it. The intermittent nature is really annoying. Ditto on ACL warranty; my wife is a lawyer so she knows how to press the case for this sort of thing. I'll keep this thread updated.

Agree the handsfree is rubbish; you can get into a situation where there's no option to hang up the call. Sometimes it refuses to answer the call.

Navigation system is completely underwhelming. Absolutely useless trying to search for anything you don't know the address of. Had a few street numbers it doesn't know about. A few weeks back a missed a turn (didn't realise) and it took me 12 minutes further along a 2-lane country road just so I could turn around! I find myself regularly using Google Maps on the phone just to be able to enter the destination into the navigation unit.

What gets me is after the dramas Toyota had with the old Fujitsu Ten units then still use them.

God I forgot about the refusal to answer the call despite desperately pressing the answer button on the dash steering wheel and any thing else you can, or the H/U picking up the call then immediately hanging it up. Leaving you unsure of if you pressed the correct button on the Steering wheel.

The more I think about it the more I realise I don’t want the stock unit again, my concern is about the system integration the stock unit has and the affect on the rest of the vehicle.

Also lol about the 12k u-turn, I know exactly what you mean. I have learnt to be wary of this and always have the Nav displayed on the main unit.

The sad thing about it is that there was a time when IGO 8 was the best navigation software out there, all be it 15 or so years ago.

OK. Toyota absolutely useless. Kept my car all day, then threw up their hands and said, "We can't fix it. Try an auto electrician". Didn't charge me for it (not that they could have).

Sent me to an auto electrician who they use on subcontract. They couldn't help me either, but sent me to a car audio mob a few streets away,

They made a few phone calls. Apparently it's a "known issue" and it can be "fixed so it will never be a problem again". Apparently more prevalent in vehicles with the overhead DVD player, but not unknown in those without (like mine). Took it in this morning to have the amp removed to be sent to Melbourne (I'm in Sydney). ETA a couple of weeks. Estimate cost $950, but could be less. Going to be a battle with Toyota over this, but I need it fixed first.

                      Arr, shirt.
                      So it's the amp?
Looks like it's under the seat, I had a look but did see anything that looked like an amp but mine will be twisted sideways as I have the climate control seats.

OK, I didn't see it due to the cover.

$950 jesus, must be made of Toyodainium.
It will be fun trying to get that from toyota with a third party fixing it.

Toyota dealer workshops are generally clueless when it comes to faults, my prado had a load squealing noise when driving along the highway.
First dealer who I dropped it off about gave me the car at the end of the day and said it didn't make any noise, I asked them if the took it for a drive to get it warm like I advised them to and the answer was no.
Second dealership, took the first guy for a drive who said he couldn't hear it. I honestly though he was having a go as the sound was echoing back off the houses in the street.
Dropped that guy back and demanded someone else to come for a drive, 50m down the road the second guy was like christ, I've heard enough turn around and we will book it in.

They replaced both front wheel bearings and it didn't fix it, some googling and its the dust seals on the front diff at the cv's. Two squirts of lithium grease and gone.

Of all the car's I've owned I've never had a stereo go.

Thanks for the update, might save me the run around.

The saga continues. The amplifier was replaced but when I started the car up - no sound again. This is a nightmare...

Hmm, same error code? What did the guys from the audio shop say?

It's gotta be the headunit, issue is I have now found is finding one that's compatible with the GXL "Premium" Amp

They seem almost as clueless as the others. They connected some diagnostic software, but couldn't clear the error code. They were going to ring the "tech guys in Melbourne" and get back to me, but I haven't heard anything yet. So far it hasn't failed again, but that means nothing. I'm actually taking my wife's Corolla in on Monday to get the front speakers replaced, so I'll have another chat then.

Found a guy on the 150 facebook group that had the same issue, replacement amp was the solution.
