  • The worst of it is in the elbow & a little into the manifold. Fingers reach.
It would want to be pretty bad to remove the manifold. But if you have time to fill ok.

Remove fuel lines ( risk contamination) cap injectors & common rail. Don't get a spec of anything near them.
    Remove egr cooler & coolant.
    Remove other fuel return line.
    6 nuts/bolts
Difficult to release clip & vacuum lines.

    • Hi All. I am new to Pradopoint so please be patient. I own a 2014 GXL D4D and have now done 33,000 km. Having read this long thread on EGR blanking plate installations it appears the earlier you install the plate (with 7 mm hole), the better off you will be. I also make the assumption that fitting the plate will also void the Toyota Warranty yet I note some members state they have done so on engines that have done less than 20,000kms and are most likely still covered by warranty. So the conundrum is wait until warranty period is up, by which time you may have serious engine damage, or fix the problem with the blanking plate and void the warranty. Is this conclusion reasonable or have I missed something? By the way there are many members extremely generous with their knowledge that should be congratulated. Cheers John

      • Yes That's about it. The sooner the better.
If you look after your vehicle the way they need to be, including put that plate in, it's highly unlikely you will have engine problems for a very long time.

What general warranty concern is likely? Which one would you have that they would find the plate?
Then you have to ask yourself could & will they try & blame your little mod on the problem? Yes they may try & blame anything they can.
Can you prove otherwise? Are you prepared to take the risk? Are you prepared to let that disaster run though your engine for 100,000k?
Then sell? Or think about the less privileged who might end up with the issues later.

Some stuff to think about? Lol.........

Anthony I hope you're right, but what I can see is so disgusting (and as you say they're all different) I'd rather be sure. I will make time by accelerating harder - smoke free - after I've done the job.

            Yoyoyoyo,

Well at least you know your starting fresh.
They do get responsiveness back with a manifold clean, if they are average to bad.

Feel free to contact me if you would like any tips.

            Cheers,

            • Thanks mate. (Help it's in pieces and I've spilled my beer!!!!!!!) Hey since you offer... My manual tells me I may need to bleed the injector lines. Do you ever find that's warranted or should I just bolt it back together & fire it up?

                Yoyoyo,

As soon as you have torqued the fuel lines & fuel system is sealed pump it up.
Then pump it periodically while you are finishing re-assembly.
Then it should chug ok. If its more than 10 seconds let starter rest & pump it again.
                Usually they start pretty well.

                  • As they get higher in Klm's they have more blow by. More oil in intake.
It works well to keep the intake clearer.
Here is one I think was fairly blocked early on, as most do, but as the oil increasing its clearing out.
You will see the lump that as not been cleared yet.

See the lump on the left?
So less soot & more oil really seems to be self cleaning.

                    6mm plates are working well.

I pondered this conundrum myself for quite a while before I bit the bullet & fitted the plate. After 32 years as a heavy vehicle mechanic I have seen what sorts of issues carbon build up & injector issues can cause, & these seem to be the main areas of concern with these engines. My reasoning is that if I can eliminate, or at minimise these two issues then the chances of having an engine warranty claim should be minimal. And if there is a need to claim then they would still need to prove that the mod caused the problem.
Although mine wasn't too bad, I still think the carbon buildup was excessive for 20000k's, so while there is always a risk this may bite me in the arse, I'm confident that I made the right decision, as I intend to keep this vehicle for quite a while.

                      • Hi all
A good benefit of the plate is how much cleaner the oil stays.

Just done 2000km since oil change including adelaide to mt gambier and back sitting on 110 most of the way.

Pulled the dip stick and still clean gold colour.

My plate has a 1/4" dia hole and has never thrown a code.

I'm going to fit a catchcan, restrict or plate and clean the EGR once it is out of warranty, but would prefer to do it the old fashioned way until then.

                          Thoughts from experienced mechs?

                          Thanks.
Sorry, but it likely needs to be manually cleaned.
It may be clean, but I doubt it.

                          • Just adding to ####'s comments... I ran a super heavy duty intake cleaner through twice , and thrashed the guts out of it after each treatment. I was imagining an improvement in smoke and performance but when I took a look inside it had made absolutely no difference. I agree if you want to shift the mmmska you gotta pull it apart and get down n dirty.

I was warned by the importer that you cannot maintain the hygiene of an elephant's rectum with a cotton bud. Okay he used different words but you get the gist.

                            • Hey #############,
After reading of your considerable experience of fitting these blanks to the prado's, I assume these are becoming a fit and forget item.
Working on aircraft myself, my brain can't help but consider how periodically these restriction plates should be checked?
I'm not at an engineering level but surely with EGR particulate squeezing itself in through these drilled holes at high speed will cause erosion over time?

Have any become enlarged over a period of time?
E.g a member has had one fitted with an 8mm hole 12 months ago and now its around 10mm or greater due to wear?

I am in NO way saying that this mod doesn't work / is crap / not worth it etc.
IMHO every vehicle should be blanked off from factory as part of delivery! (the VW "scandal" will now probably cause australia to start emission testing instead of just accepting the sticker / paperwork) Anyway, while these plates are cheap as chips insurance for the engine... should I be considering replacing one of these every X years due to particulate eroding this tiny hole?
I'd hate for these to wear unevenly or worse develop a fracture and start sending pieces towards the turbo.

Has anyone pulled one back out and seen if there restrictor plate has cracked / drilled hole become enlarged?
                              Thanks in advance all

Looking forward to the educated answer to this one.

If true, then maybe they should be selling them in a blister pack of 6 or 10 plates.
