      I will share that!

Look at this one from today, 2010 with 130k on her, this one is a good example of an egr that liked to be open.
I did a diagnostic before I started work on it, that's how I knew it was going to be a bad one.

Avoid acid baths. I find it causes alloy & bolts to corrode.
Scrape it & degreaser/carby cleaner cans.
Sand blasting would work well but get contaminated fast.

So what happens downstream of all this soot? If pieces of soot break off during banking plate/catch can installation, is there a filter to stop them from heading further downstream?

Nothing. It doesn't break off. The right way to do it is manually clean it. Start fresh. You have to be carefull the way you clean it.
Some places are not going to takethe required care, what's new right. No filters anywhere.
This is the problem, feeding the engine dirty unfiltered hot air full of soot.

Now there's an idea, after fitting a restricter plate, jam an oiled foam filter in the egr cooler outlet.
It might block up eventually but that's a clean idea.

That dirty intake was from my 2010 which I have owned since new. I also got #### to replace all 4 injectors and pipes as a proactive maint activity. When I inspected the old seals there was signs they were starting to wear. Its got 135K on the clock and I'm planning to keep it so it was a good decision to get all of this done before any issues arise. The injectors were not too bad but again there was a fair amount of carbon buildup on the tips. I was definitely surprised at the amount of soot in the intake and would definitely suggest this is inspected and potential EGR fix. Thanks to the forum members and #### for providing all this information.

Ordered a plate with no hole will start with that and drill if necessary. Will clean out the EGR at the same time. Mine has 130k on the clock but cold feedbacks are ok so will leave the manifold until new injectors.
                  Thanks for your advise.

Be aware that you may end up with fault codes or check engine light with the port completely restricted - that's why they're now selling the ones with the 7mm hole as recommended.

Got myself an 'exhaust gas reduction device', not sure I am using it properly! The good lady wife would disagree ;-)

I really want to block off the EGR system altogether and have researched it a lot. Going to fit the plate first though. Will wait till the weather warms up as I am a big sook as it's a little too cold in the shed.

                      Cheers Brad

Now I see where Toyota got the Bugger from in there adds .Stripped the EGR back to the manifold, not as clogged as the ones in the pics. Real messy job but it came off easier than I thought. Put in a full blank to start with and drove about 30 klms no codes . Bugger next time I started on came the lights so drilled a 7mm hole problem solved.

Now when I do a cold start the Actual EGR valve Position shows 80 to 90 %.
Before blanking it was around 40 to 50 %.
So does this mean its trying to push more hot air in and defeating the purpose of the blank ?
Also what is the twin butter fly for below the EGR.
Sorry to be long winded but like many I value your opinion.

                          Wasp stopper?

Warm up the engine first, in this cold working on all metal parts, very cold can't feel hands.
Give egr a re-clean start fresh.
If you going to do that, grab one of these

I had a Pajero for 5 years before the Prado. Had an EGR blank from 12months old. Engine appeared to run much smoother and fuel economy maybe marginally better - but the oil was definitely cleaner between changes and less turbo lag/more responsive. Definitely keen to give it a go on the Prado, but a bit put off at how difficult and fiddly it is to do compared to the Pajero. Might wait a bit and get the whole EGR cleaned out and restricted at the same time.

That's the right way to do it, clean & start fresh.
The results will be much the same as the paj.
                              Definitely a top priority mod.

Getting to be a bit of an expert at putting in and out blanking plates. Its out for good now. I was not happy with the EGR position being nearly fully open seems to be defeating the whole exercise. Also it was confirmed that excess boost does in fact go through the EGR so damage to the turbo could happen.
Also the car seems to run smoother.
A local car workshop offered me a plug and play version like the one for the Mits but it was for the Hilux and their Map is larger (Bugger). He is looking at the Prado 150
